If the post-season of the 2013 Aussie Rules contest has gone pretty much to plan, with the four sides who topped the regular season now meeting for a place in the Grand Final, the regular season certainly didn’t. Fremantle came from almost nowhere to be the strongest side in the second half of the season, whilst the strongly-fancied Sydney Swans faded badly when confronted with a tougher-than-most home stretch.
As a result, Sydney went from being contenders to win the minor premiership (i.e. top the ladder) to almost also-rans. Only some big wins over lowly sides stopped them from dropping out of the top four altogether. This meant that they had to take the long route to this stage, missing out on a bye week last weekend and instead having to go through a tough game against Carlton just to reach a stage many thought they would get to with ease.
The sides met twice in the regular season. Sydney edged a close game at the SCG in Round 2, whilst Round 8 saw a thriller ending in a low-scoring 70-70 draw. Both of those games were in Sydney, however. This time, the Swans have to head to Perth, where they haven’t played against the Dockers since 2010 (although they did win that game).
Fremantle are 3/10 favourites to win at Bet365, with Sydney ranking well outside that at 13/5. With those betting odds you might want to think about looking to one of the other markets on this game, such as the number of points to be scored. On that note, be very wary of going over 180 in your sports picks, you have to go back over four seasons to find a game in which one of these sides scored over 100 points.Discuss the Australian Football League Finals on SBRForum's message boards!
