The Kings come in off a hard fought 3-2 loss Friday night, which snapped a three game win streak, while Carolina is off a 2-1 home loss to Toronto, which was their 5th loss in a row.
Loss to Red Wings Snaps Three Game Win Streak
The Los Angeles Kings went into their game vs Detroit on Friday night riding a three game win streak and they came out with a 3-2 loss. The game was tied a 1-1 at the end of the first period before Detroit outscored them 2-1 in the second period. LA had their chances as they outshot Detroit 37-29 in the game. Scoring both goals for the Kings was Jeff Carter, who now has nine goals on the year, which is 2nd on the team, behind Tyler Toffoli, who has 10. Carter does lead the team in points with 19.
Jhonas Enroth absorbed the loss in the game and he is now 3-1 on the year, with a very nice 1.2 GAA. Jonathan quick should be back in goal for this one and he is 9-6 with a 2.32 GAA on the year, while vs the Hurricanes in his career he is 4-1 with a 1.38 GAA vs them. The Kings check in as a less than average offensive team as they rank 20th in the league in scoring (2.5 gpg), despite the fact that they are 1st in the league in shots per game (31.8). On defense they have been very good, ranking 2nd in goals allowed (2.2 gpg) and 3rd in penalty kill.
Losing Streak Hits Five after Loss to Toronto
The Toronto Maple Leafs are starting to play good hockey and the latest team to find this out was the Carolina Hurricanes, who fell to Toronto 2-1 in a shootout at home on Friday night. It was Carolina’s 5th loss in a row and 7th in their last 8 games. All the scoring in regulation came in the third period and scoring Carolina’s lone goal was Brad Malone, which was his 1st goal of the year, while taking the loss in the game was Cam Ward, who is now 5-9 with a 2.40 GAA on the year. He is 3-4 with a 2.11 GAA vs the Kings in his career.
The culprit for the losing streak is lack of offense as they have now scored a total of six goals during the five game skid. For the year, Carolina in now 28th in the league in scoring at 1.9 gpg and they are 30th in the league on the power play. On defense they check in at 22nd in goals allowed at 2.8 gpg, despite the fact that they have faced the fewest shots per game in the league at 24.6 spg. They haven’t been that strong on the penalty kill either as they have allowed teams to convert on 20.5% of their chances, which is 19th in the league.
Los Angeles is:
7-1 in their last eight after scoring two goals or less in their previous game
7-2 in their last nine vs. Eastern Conference
8-20 in their last 28 when their opponent scores two goals or less in their previous game
6-15 their last 21 at home
The Carolina Hurricanes have been more like a tropical depression of late as they have lost five in a row and it shouldn’t get any better for them in this one. The Kings are the better team and have the better goalie and an offense that is in much better form right now. Quick has solid numbers vs the Canes and the Kings have won four of their last five trips to PNC Arena, plus Carolina just hasn’t been a good home team of late. This one should go the way of the Kings.
