NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series highlight’s Sunday night’s auto racing schedule this Memorial Day Weekend with the running of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Free Picks inside.
Last Saturday night at Charlotte in the $1 million exhibition Sprint All-Star Race, Joey Logano took the checkered flag followed by Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr. My top two sports picks in that race were Kyle Busch (10th) and Denny Hamlin (9th), but each could only manage a top 10 finish.
The following is a look at my top valued favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday at Charlotte based on betting odds as provided by BetOnline.
Top Valued Favorite
There are three drivers at the top of this week’s list at +600 sports odds, but my top valued pick is Kevin Harvick. The No. 4 Chevrolet has not been nearly as dominant this season with just one victory as part of five Top-5 finishes in the first 12 point-race events, but I still like this team’s chances to make its second trip to the Winner’s Circle late Sunday night. The main reason why I am so high on Harvick in this race is a solid track record at Charlotte over the past few seasons. Going back to 2013, he has won here twice with two additional runner-up finishes. He has not placed higher than ninth in his last six trips around this track in a Sprint Cup event.
Top Valued Contender
I am banking on a sweep with Joey Logano as my top valued contender for this week’s race at Charlotte. He has been listed at +1000 betting odds to claim his first checkered flag of the season in a point race after coming close a few times with a trio of top-five runs. The No. 22 Ford is in the midst of a bit of a rough batch with finishes of 22nd or higher in the last three point race events, but this past Saturday night’s victory is a good sign that this team is ready to turn things around. I also like the fact that Logano is also coming off a victory in the second race at Charlotte last season.
Top Valued Longshot
Staying true to my game plan of finding betting value in the young guns of the Sprint Cup series, I am going with Kyle Larson at +2500 as this week’s best longshot play on the board. Behind the wheel of the No. 42 Chevy he finished a distant 16th in last week’s All-Star Race, but I like his chances this week following a second-place finish at Dover on May 15 after leading that race for 85 laps. This team also made a run at a checkered flag earlier in the season at Martinsville with a third-place finish. Larson is definitely a hit or miss pick with six other runs outside the top 25, but this could be one of those races where he is a hit at some very favorable odds. His best career finish at Charlotte was sixth in the second point race here in 2014.
Betting Odds for other Notable Drivers
The other two favorites to win at +600 are Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson. These two have already combined for five victories in the first 12 point race events. Three drivers listed at +800 betting odds include Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr. Joining Logano at +1000 is Brad Keselowski and both Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin have been opened at +1200 betting odds. Rounding out the list of notables is Dale Earnhardt Jr. at +1500 to win.
