Manny Pacquiao is the only 8-division champion in all of boxing and he returns to the ring at the ripe old age of 40. Manny is an incredible 60-7-2 with 39 of those victories coming by KO. 40 is a bit long in the tooth for an athlete to still be competing, especially against legit competition, but Manny doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
While Pacquiao is the pinnacle of the sport, his opponent Adrien “The Problem’ Broner is no easy task. Adrien is a former 4 division champion himself and has 24 KOs on his 33-3-1 record. The biggest factor in this fight is that Adrien is over 10 years younger than Manny and is arguably in the prime of his life. Adrien’s 3 losses have come to Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter, and most recently the undefeated Mikey Garcia. There isn’t any shame in those losses proving that Adrien is a legitimate challenger for Manny’s title.
While both these fighters have an over 50 percent KO record, I believe they will both take their time in this match. Pacquiao only fought once in 2017, twice in 2016, and once again in 2015 where he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Seven out of Manny’s last 8 fights have gone the 12 round distance with only his most recent fight to Lucas Martin Matthysse ending by TKO. Far be it from me to question a legend like Pacquiao, but you do sometimes see power waning for fighters late in their careers forcing them to fight more tactically and relying less on their power.
Adrien also appears to have been taking a more tactical approach to his recent fights. Similar to Manny he has been slowing down. Adrien fought three times in 2015 but he only fought once in 2016 and then twice in 2017 and again only once in 2018. Of Adrien’s last 12 fights 9 of them have gone to the judges and 1 of his fights that ended by KO was in the final round of the fight.
In this fight I would lean on the over 10.5 rounds. I think Manny is getting old and slowing down. He is the rightful favorite in this fight but I am not a fan of laying -300 on fighters who might be in the twilight of their careers. I think Adrien will be cautious coming off his most recent 2 fights which were a unanimous decision loss and a majority decision draw feeling like he needs a win and both fighters might be dealing with some ring rust after fighting just once in 2018 each.
