With the championship already heated up as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton both have a win under their belt, we head to Portugal for round 3 of the F1 season. Hamilton leads Verstappen by just 1 point heading into this race.
Formula 1 Portuguese GP
Sunday, May 2nd, 2021 – Race Time 10am EDT at Algarve International Circuit
Last time out we predicted Max Verstappen would take the win and he did so in very solid fashion with a gap of 22 seconds to 2nd place Lewis Hamilton. McLaren driver, Lando Norris managed his first podium of the season, and was close to finishing in 2nd place, as Hamilton overtook him with less than 3 laps remaining.
This leaves us now with just a 1 point gap between 1st place Hamilton and 2nd place Verstappen in the champions leader board. Verstappen on 43 points and Hamilton on 44. It’s already looking like a two horse race between these two drivers, although we think their teammates will have a lot to do with the outright winner of the championship as Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez have yet to step up this season and claim a win or even a top 2 finish.
Hamilton and Verstappen will know they must get help from their teammates if they wish to win this championship. To date Bottas has a 3rd place finish and a DNF, and Perez has a 5th and 11th place finish.
Its very hard to call the winner of the race this week, and it will most likely be like this for the majority of the season. The best online sportsbooks have both Hamilton and Verstappen set at +125 to win on Sunday.
Circuit Info and Characteristics
The Formula1 circus made a return to Portugal in 2020 following an absence of 22 years in which their was no F1 race in Portugal. The race last year was held at the Portimao circuit (nickname for Algarve International Circuit), which is also were it is held for the upcoming race this Sunday. The track is 2.89 miles long per lap and the race distance for Sunday’s race will be 66 Laps. Lewis Hamilton won the race by a massive 25 seconds last season.
There is not much info on this track as it is relatively new to F1. It was opened in 2008 and when it originally opened a number of F1 teams tested on the track but when the FIA introduced stricter limits on testing it was abandoned by the teams until its return last season. The sole reason for the return to Portimao was the COVID-19 pandemic, which left the FIA looking for tracks to race on when many became unavailable due to the pandemic.
The most unique thing about the track is its layout in terms of small slopes and sharp corners. Interestingly only one driver retired from the race last year, which was very low considering it’s a track we would expect to see quite a few DNFs.

Favorite Prop Pick
Our favorite prop pick this week has a unique criteria, as we are looking to oppose the pole sitter, but only if the pole sitter is not Verstappen. If Verstappen qualifies on pole, we don’t like this pick half as much, it’s still worth a punt for your sports betting if your looking for a vested interest in the race but if you only want solid picks, stay away if Verstappen claims pole.
We are looking to take the grid position of the race winner to be 2nd place at +260 or 3rd/4th place at odds of +350. A 1 unit stake on 2nd place and a half unit stake on 3rd/4th will guarantee a return in profit.

Official Best Bet
We cant choose the race winner between Verstappen and Hamilton, clearly Verstappen has the fastest car but when we look back at the first two races, Hamilton was lucky to win race 1, and race number 2 he might have won only for his crash. If both drivers weren’t the same odds, it might be easier to find an edge. We lean Verstappen but not enough to make it official.
Our best bet this Sunday is Alpha Tauri both to finish inside the points. They have one of the fastest cars out of all the midfield pack and two very strong drivers in Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda. They haven’t cashed this bet in the first two races, this Sunday could be when they come good.
