After a great comeback-draw against Chelsea, Southampton will look to put further daylight between themselves and the drop zone.

Premier League Football Tips: Saints vs. Everton

Now it’s just Champions League hopefuls, Everton standing in their way.

There was a time recently when Southampton were being talked about as relegation contenders but with a string of decent results over the last few games (Southampton have just two defeats in their last 10 league games) the odds of them going down and out are 7/4, making them 5th favourite for the drop.

Everton are also being touted as champion leaks contenders for earlier in the season but now they sit fifth in the Premier League table and are 9/2 to finish in the top four. Southampton seemed a lot more comfortable in their league position, four points clear of the dreaded dotted line but Everton know that victory this weekend could see them tied on points with fourth placed Tottenham while defeat would allow sixth placed Arsenal to step above them in the race for a top four finish.

Enough with the table place settings…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?

Don’t bet against Saints, Nigel Adkins’ side have taken 18 points out of a possible 36, losing only two of their last 12  Premier League games. They have been a solid play for our football betting tickets.

Southampton will be looking for revenge against Everton after they went down 3-1 last September, but Everton will fancy that they can do similarly well as they scored in four of their last five games and in fact have scored 18 times on the road this season. Southampton have only recorded three home victories all season, but with four draws and four defeats and a Southampton-based goal tally of 15 for and 14 against, a draw might just be the smartest bet.

The bookies have Southampton winning at 13/5, Everton winning at 21/20 and that draw at 13/5. What's more the shortest odds on the correct score of 1-1 at 6/1 betting odds. I think that Southampton will do what they did against Chelsea and it's certainly worth betting on the game being in Everton's favour on the 45 min mark but ending honours even after 90 which is available with the book is an 15/1.

0-0 might be offered up at 14/1 but I can't see this game ending without a goal as both teams like to score and both teams seem to have plenty of goals scored against them in the Premier League. Everton have let in 26 goals after 22 games while Southampton have let in 40.

What do the last five games tell us.

It's worth noting that three of Southampton's last five games in all competitions have ended drawn, their sole victory from that five was their controversial 1-0 victory over Aston Villa last weekend where a questionable penalty seems to be the difference between the two sides. I’d say all of those facts, especially the questionable penalty against Villa point to Southampton settling for a draw.

Everton by comparison somehow played out a 0-0 draw against Swansea in their last game and I can't see the Toffees settling for another no score bore draw.

Is there a reason to back an Everton victory?

Everton have a very good record against Southampton having wooden six and drawn two of their last seven games against them at Goodison Park, both a trip down to Southampton especially with the Saints fans in fine voice and full of the New Year is momentum they might find it difficult to hit their stride.
