The Winter Olympics are in full throttle and we have isolated five events to include in your Olympic picks this weekend. Let’s get to it and start cashing! All times listed are Eastern.
- Lindsay Vonn (USA) wins women's Super-G +230
- Sofia Goggia (Italy) wins women's Super-G +490
- Lara Gut (Switzerland) wins women's Super-G +540
- Tina Weirather (Austria) wins women's Super-G +750
There are opportunities to bet the field, as well as some of the lesser-known contestants, but we will limit our choices in this Women’s Super G category to the top four as the gold will most likely be draped around one of these elite female skiers. Ultimately, we like the pricey return the Olympic odds are rendering on Switzerland’s Gut at +540.
The Swiss downhill princess wiped out a trail of photographers in an earlier run but came away unscathed, as did the photographers, and is good to go for the Women’s Super G on Friday night (Saturday morning in PyeongChang). Gut copped a bronze in the Sochi Olympics in the Women’s Downhill and has a bevy of silver and bronze in the world championships in both the Downhill and Super G. She is poised to claim the gold over the highly-touted American Vonn and we will back her in our Olympic picks on Friday night.Friday, 10:10 p.m. ET, Czech Republic vs Canada, Men’s Ice HockeyFree Olympic Pick: Canada -2½ (+380)
Oh Canada! Yes, we aren’t fooling around with traditional puck lines as we believe Team Canada will strike hard against the overmatched Czechs and take another step toward Olympic gold. Watch the best team in the tourney win going away as it did in a 5-1 victory over Switzerland and get a huge return at +380 for your faith.
Saturday, 2:40 a.m. ET, Switzerland vs South Korea, Men’s Ice HockeyFree Olympic Pick: Switzerland -3½ (+190)
Switzerland was simply outmatched in its first game of the Olympic tournament when it fell 5-1 to Team Canada. However, the Swiss are a solid skating team and will be pitted against a South Korea team that was edged 2-1 by the Czechs but will be no match for a sleeker, slicker and more talented group this weekend. Looks like a blowout in the making.
Saturday, 2:40 a.m. ET Finland vs Sweden, Women’s Ice HockeyFree Olympic Pick: Sweden +2½ (-155)
I’m not sure why Finland is so heavily favored over the Swedes, a team that defeated Japan 2-1 and then trounced Korea 8-0 before falling 2-1 to a talented Switzerland squad. Finland was topped 3-1 and 4-1 by the tournament’s best teams in USA and Canada, respectively, but bounced back with a solid 5-1 win over the Russians. Give Team Sweden a 2½-goal head start, and I will lay the -155 that they can hang tough and stay within the margin to get the cover in this one.
Saturday, 10:10 a.m. ET Switzerland vs Russia IOC, Women’s Ice HockeyFree Olympic Pick: Switzerland +110
In a choice between the Russians and the Swiss, I will opt for the latter and get a +110 return on my investment. The Russians, also known this Olympics as OAR (Olympic Athletes from Russia), have a -14 goal differential after getting waxed by Canada, USA and Finland heading into this clash with Switzerland. And speaking of the Swiss, they are 3-0 in this tournament, so call me crazy but I think we’ve got the better team at a bargain price.
