Group C Betting
Group C action is set to kick off on Monday, June 8, with the defending champions Japan getting their campaign underway against Switzerland and Cameroon taking on Ecuador. As far as group betting markets go, Japan are predictably the favourites at -700 soccer odds to clinch top spot while Switzerland loom as the second favourites at +500 soccer odds. Japan are also one of the competition favourites to lift the title, entering the World Cup Betting market as the third overall favourites at +800 future odds, behind USA and Germany (both at +300 at the start of the competition) and France at +500.
Also in Group C action today, soccer bettors will see newcomers Cameroon and Ecuador kick off their campaigns. Both are the long shots of this section, priced at +3300 and +5000 to win it outright.
Here are our previews for both round 1 matches in Group C, complete with soccer betting odds and picks.
Japan -200 vs. Switzerland +550, Draw +300
This is sure to be the popcorn match of the day as two of the best teams according to the soccer odds in Group C collide. Japan stole the imagination of football fans the world over four years ago when they became first-time champions, beating the competition favourites USA in the final. All eyes are sure to be on them today when they kick off their title defence campaign as the firm favourites.
The pressure is going to be on the Japanese to come through as the considerable -200 favourites to win outright, but Coach Norio Sasaki is quietly confident about his girls' chances against debutants Switzerland. According to him, the Japanese women's team is much better than it was four years ago, and more than capable of making a serious run for a second-straight title.
Japan is making its seventh appearance in the competition. They are after winning the AFC Women's Asian Cup for the first time (May 2014), backing up their FIFA World Cup credentials in fine style. By contrast, Switzerland are making their World Cup debut. However, that doesn't mean they will be a cakewalk.
The Swiss qualified undefeated, going 9-1-0 in UEFA qualification. They are young, enthusiastic and on the verge of making history for their country at this women's football showpiece. They also have the superbly talented Ramona Bachmann, Swiss Woman's Player of the Year (2009), who can make an instant impact in this game as well as Lara Dickenmann.
Both sides have plenty of attacking flair and offensive weapons that could turn this clash into a bit of a shootout. As it is, it could also go either way despite the lopsided soccer betting market. Japan should win, but the Swiss are dangerous floaters that could give them a run for their money. If Ramona Bachmann can impose her will in this game (she has 32 goals in 59 caps), Japan could find themselves in a spot of trouble.
We've gone back and forth on this soccer pick. We like the Japanese women's team and are confident they'll be worthy defending champions in this competition. We'd like to go with Japan on our soccer picks, but at -200 soccer odds we don't feel any joy. This is too tough of a matchup to warrant such hefty soccer odds. Plus it's their World Cup opener and they must be feeling a bit of pressure and nerves right about now.
On the Other Side of the Coin
Swiss debutants they might be, but there's a lot of experience at the top of the women's game on this team to make them a viable underdog soccer pick at +550 to mastermind the upset. They have nothing to lose and everything to prove and they can rise to the challenge. Simply because of their disingenuous soccer odds, they are worth a tickle in our opinion.
If you're not comfortable taking a risk on your soccer picks, be it because of a conservative nature or are simply undecided about this matchup altogether, then impartial soccer betting markets for this game are the best option. So cast your eye at total betting odds and take the OVER 2.5 at -138 at Bet365.
Our Recommended Soccer Picks
Switzerland to win outright at +550
Swiss to win or draw at +150
Over 2.5 at -138
Cameroon -150 vs. Ecuador +450, Draw +260
In the other match of the day's soccer betting card, a pair of debutants is set to collide. Cameroon have the edge on the soccer odds board at -150 to win outright, largely down to their solid qualifying campaign as African runners-up. Ecuador, meanwhile, had to go through the playoffs ordeal and eke out a 1-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago to advance into the finals. That said this game is a right tossup. Both nations will be looking to advance their cause in Group C and, arguably, this is the most winnable match on paper for either side. After this game, the competition gets stiffer with dates against Japan and Switzerland. With both playing for these three points here it's anybody's for the taking. Then again, they could just cancel each other out as a result with a draw.
