Max Verstappen once again owns pole position entering the Spanish Grand Prix. He's a massive betting favorite, but is there value elsewhere? Find out in our Spanish GP Formula 1 betting picks and predictions based on the best available odds.

The stars of Formula 1 will be on track for the second week in a row this Sunday. Next up on the series schedule is a trip to Barcelona for the annual Spanish Grand Prix. There will certainly be no shortage of prestige this week as this is one of the oldest auto races in the world that is still contested today.

Defending race winner Max Verstappen was able to nab the pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session. Last year’s F1 champion has been on an absolute tear once again in 2023 and leads the F1 championship odds. Verstappen has won each of the last two races and four of six in total this season.

With several other big names turning in disappointing qualifying efforts, oddsmakers believe that Verstappen has a clear path to winning the Spanish GP for the second year in a row. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz is viewed as the primary challenger. The Spaniard will join Verstappen in starting on the front row in his home country.

Here are our best bets and 2023 Spanish Grand Prix picks for Sunday’s action at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (odds via FanDuel and BetMGM; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Spanish Grand Prix predictions

Outright winner: Max Verstappen (-380 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Last week, Verstappen was tabbed as a massive favorite to win the Monaco GP after edging Fernando Alonso in qualifying for the pole. Bettors looking to get behind Verstappen in the outright market this week will need to lay an even larger number. Despite the limited return available in FanDuel’s -440 price, there is no reason to veer away from the favorite.

Verstappen capitalized on his front row starting spot last weekend and went on to obliterate the field. The race may have gotten wild behind him, but the defending series champion crossed the line nearly 28 seconds ahead of Alonso, the runner-up.

Making life that much easier for the favorite this week is the fact that several of the sport’s biggest stars struggled in qualifying. Even if an expected blocking penalty on Pierre Gasly does come to fruition, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton will be the only two legitimate contenders starting on the first two rows.

With names such as Alonso, George Russell, and Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing teammate, Sergio Perez, starting on the fourth row and back, the pole sitter should be able to drive away to a comfortable advantage once again. The return isn’t great, but it’s impossible to advise bettors to bet on anyone but Verstappen to win the Spanish Grand Prix outright.

Podium finish parlay: Verstappen (-700) and Lewis Hamilton (-105) = +123 Parlay (via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

Despite the fact that Verstappen is a massive favorite to win the Spanish GP outright, bettors don’t have to get too wild to create a plus-money podium finish parlay. Based on FanDuel’s current odds, Verstappen can be paired with any driver other than Carlos Sainz to create a top-3 finish parlay ticket with plus-money odds.

We're recommending a two-leg ticket that includes both Verstappen and Hamilton to finish on the podium. The former is virtually a lock to do so, barring some unforeseen mechanical failure. FanDuel’s odds imply that Verstappen has an 81.5% chance of winning the race and an 87.5% chance of finishing on the podium.

As for Hamilton, a -105 price for a podium finish only implies a 51.2% probability. However, as previously noted, the seven-time F1 champion will have a leg up on the starting grid over several of the sport’s top drivers. Hamilton is nowhere near as dominant as he once was, but he is still a six-time Spanish GP winner, including five straight victories from 2017-21.

Needless to say, a +123 return on this parlay involving Verstappen and Hamilton is hardly an opportunity to brush aside. Bettors looking to up the ante here can add in Sainz for a three-leg ticket with +250 odds.

Another alternative could be to add in Perez. He will have some ground to make up, but a podium finish could be within reach. Adding him along with Verstappen and Hamilton produces a three-leg parlay with +357 odds.

Head-to-head matchup: Lando Norris (-105 via BetMGM) vs. Lance Stroll ⭐⭐

Among the interesting driver head-to-heads available for action at BetMGM this week is a matchup between McLaren’s Lando Norris and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll. Despite the fact that Norris will be starting one row ahead of his counterpart, he is considered the betting underdog in this prop, with Stroll listed as a -135 favorite.

Of course, McLaren is not a major powerhouse team in Formula 1. That being said, one cannot help but notice that Norris has consistently run well in the Spanish Grand Prix over the past few years. He started 11th on the grid last year and gained three positions to finish eighth. Norris also finished eighth in 2021, gaining one position from his spot on the grid to do so.

Although Stroll will have a much better starting spot on Sunday than he has in each of the last two years, his history at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya isn’t spectacular. He finished three spots behind Norris in 2021 and was well back last year with a 17th-place result. Both times, Stroll crossed the line one lap off the pace.

The betting odds rightfully indicate that this should be a competitive matchup. However, based on track history, starting grid spots and Stroll’s inconsistency in the current racing season, the prices should probably be flipped. We’ll look to take advantage and get behind Norris at -105 odds.
