Manchester United vs. Stoke City
It’s all going wrong for Louis van Gaal at Man Utd. He is clear favorite in the betting on the next manager to be sacked (-225 with Paddy Power) after presiding over an awful run of form that has seen them fall to fifth in the table and led to an ever-increasing clamour for his head among frustrated fans. A win over an erratic Stoke side would help ease the pressure and do wonders for their battle to finish in the top four, but it will be a real struggle.

Stoke are a very unpredictable team. In their last match, everyone expected them to give Leicester a real battle, but they limped to a 3-0 hiding. Before that they secured a very credible draw against Arsenal and beat Norwich. Earlier this month they followed wins over Everton and Man Utd with a disappointing defeat at the hands of West Brom. It is always difficult to predict how they will play as you never know which Stoke will turn up. On their day, they are a fantastic side, blessed with the creative talents of Bojan Krkic, Marko Arnautovic and Xerdan Shaqiri. But when that trio are quiet, they really struggle. They were without all three due to injury in the last game, and it really showed as they struggled to create anything. Bojan and Arnautovic are expected back for this game, however, and that will be a massive boost.

Man Utd are struggling with their own injury crisis in defence, and the youngsters drafted in will be severely tested by Stoke’s nifty attackers. They are the favorites to win this match (best priced at -133.33 with William Hill), but that is not a particularly attractive price for a team that are struggling for form. Stoke are the rank outsiders at +450 with Bet365, which is an intriguing bet, while the draw is +260 with Bet365 and various others. Given the bizarre form of Stoke and the turmoil at Man Utd, it might be worth avoiding betting on the outrights in this match.

There are some very intriguing bets to be had elsewhere. The top tip has to be 0-0 at half-time. Old Trafford has seen just three first half goals in 11 games this season, by far the fewest in the league. Only one of them has been for Man Utd, and it has become a joke among fans, saying they need not bother turning up until half-time. Despite the astonishing number of times it has been 0-0 at half-time at Old Trafford this season, you can still get +175 with Coral on this match to be 0-0 at half-time. That looks like a great bet. Man Utd play a rather turgid brand of football at the moment – lots of possession, lots of sideways passing, very few chances created. Stoke have a strong defence and love a battle, as evidence in their recent 0-0 draw with Arsenal. This makes the soccer odds on offer for 0-0 at half-time very attractive.

Another soccer pick worth looking at is under 2.5 goals. Bet Victor is offering -150 on this, which looks like an astute bet. Five of Man Utd’s last seven games have seen fewer than 2.5 goals. They are the home team and will set the pace, and it is highly likely that Stoke will sit back, absorb pressure and try to catch them on the break. A low-scoring game is therefore expected, perhaps a 1-1 or 0-0 draw, or one team nicking it 1-0. Stoke lack a recognised striker and Wayne Rooney has been misfiring up front for Man Utd, so don’t expect a thrilling match full of goals.
