William Hill's Lee Phelps is looking at the betting with two teams scared of falling too many places in the Premier League. You may be surprised at the odds and what he goes for in his free picks

West Brom are in 14th position and Southampton are fifth, with 19 points separating them, but having seen both sides play recently, I’d say both were about five places from where they should be. The Baggies have pushed on under the management of Tony Pulis and look like a mid-table team, unfortunately for Ronald Koeman’s men they have also started to look like that too, which is something you should consider when looking at the soccer odds.

West Brom
Albion held Saints to a goalless draw at St Mary's in their first home game and were one of three teams to take something away from the South coast up to the New Year, where the form has dipped somewhat.

Back then Brown Ideye should have won the game but he was struggling to settle in and score. In the last few weeks he has started to show some of the promise that led the Baggies to shell out £10 million pounds for the Nigerian. This week the national side’s assistant coach has been talking about Ideye:

"I am not surprised that it took him this long (to settle), but I believe he will shine in the Premier League. What people don't understand is that the Premier League is different from every other league in the world.

"You know he is coming from Ukraine and the league in the country is not as fast as the Premier League. But after about four months or thereabouts he has picked steam and I think he will continue this way."

Ideye has four in four and is priced at 4.5 (7/2) to score at any time in the game.

Southampton
What Koeman would give for Ideye’s goals at the moment. He has seen his side score one goal in their last four games, despite having 65 shots on goal and 21 on target.

Twelve million pound signing Shane Long has been in the treatment room at the club with a rib injury, leaving Graziano Pelle to attempt to rediscover that great early season form. He hasn’t scored since December 20th and you could see his desperation to score against Liverpool. He was ignoring easier passes and going for ambitious long range efforts.

Southampton have got the best defensive record in the division only conceding 19 goals in the league this season, which is three less than Chelsea. They also have the best away record too.

Of course that is all commendable but you need goals and Pelle’s six in his first eight league games seems a long way off, he has only scored two in his last 18 league games and when you compare that to the other teams vying for top six and Champions League football, they all have scorers in double figures apart from Liverpool who have Daniel Sturridge coming back to fitness.

Soccer picks
It’s perfectly possible that Southampton find their scoring touch again and start to convert those chances I talked about, but Tony Pulis sides aren’t usually the most open.

I’m looking at a low scoring game here, with West Brom coming off the back of a nil nil draw with Sunderland. The Baggies need another 10 points for safety, so will be satisfied with a point against a team who are still in the top five for my soccer picks.
