Diverse Musical Spectrum Vies For MTV's 'Video Music Awards'

Color us surprised that MTV still airs music videos but apparently it does because the “music’ network announced a slate of nominees in July for the Video Music Awards.

There are many familiar names nominated including Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Lil Nas with Billy Ray Cyrus, Shawn Mendes, Jonas Brother, Halsey and 21 Savage.

Reality is that the alleged network devoted to music airs a lot of reality shows as of late but music still has a place on the network’s many channels – you just have to look for it.

But the network’s audience may be aging out with younger generations are turning to streaming services such as Spotify and YouTube to watch videos.

We’re way past “Video Killed the Radio Star’ by Buggles, the first video to ever air on MTV. Maybe we should be bracing ourselves for “Spotify Killed the MTV.’

MTV just doesn’t seem to have the same cultural impact it once had – not that the videos they air and are nominated don’t.

The videos, especially, Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down’ with its strong pro-LGBTQ messaging. The video features queer stars such as the Fab 5 from “Queer Eye,’ Ellen DeGeneres, Billy Porter and Laverne Cox. The video hasn’t been without controversy, because of Swift’s long-standing commitment for not getting political. The pendulum, for Swift, has swung the other way with her now recommending candidates and causes and not everyone is happy with that. Too bad, how sad.

That video as well as 21 Savage ft. J. Cole – “a lot’; Billie Eilish – “Bad Guy’ ; Ariana Grande – “thank u, next’ ; Jonas Brothers – “Sucker’ and Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus – “Old Town Road (Remix)’ are nominated for Video of the Year. Swift and Lil Nas are actually not favored in this category, Ariana Grande is.

“You Better Calm Down’ is likely a shoo-in for the “Video for Good’ category vs. Halsey – “Nightmare’; The Killers – “Land of the Free’; Jamie N Commons, Skylar Grey ft. Gallant – “Runaway Train’ ;John Legend – “Preach’; and Lil Dicky – “Earth.’

So it is possible this could be Swift’s awards, 10 years after Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech with “imma let you finish.’ Yes, it’s been 10 years. It Swift gets to give a speech this year, she likely won’t have to deal with Kanye. He isn’t nominated and neither is Beyonce.

MyBookie is offering odds on many of the categories, but not all, you can find the full list here and the bets below.

The “VMAs’ air on the MTV networks on Aug. 26. Swift is among the performers.
