Our player to keep an eye on will get in action this Wednesday for ATP Paris second round. Find out who he is and also our top tennis pick for Day 3 of this event.
Kei Nishikori (6) vs. Jeremy Chardy
Jeremy Chardy was close from elimination on the first round after being a set and a break down against his fellow countryman, Lucas Pouille. Jeremy turned things around by raising his level while Pouille struggled to keep a solid performance.
Despite having a tremendous firepower, Chardy is extremely inconsistent with the backhand being his weakest shot. Jeremy ended the first round match with 30 winners / 32 unforced errors while Lucas made 22 winners / 32 unforced errors.
Chardy reaches 2nd round on this event for the 4th time on his career but was never able to go further in the three previous appearances.
In our tournament preview we selected Kei Nishikori as the player to keep an eye on this event. Nishikori withdrew from Basel due to a sore elbow in order to get in better shape to this event. The conditions in Paris are quite good for the Japanese and last year Kei reached semifinals.
Nishikori gave a little interview before this event saying that was looking forward to play in Paris and that the slower court conditions are very good for his game style.
The h2h is 2 – 2 with Chardy winning two matches on Clay while Nishikori emerged victorious in the other two meetings on Hard Court.
Nishikori decided not to compete in recent weeks in order to present himself at 100% for the last two tournaments of the year. Chardy will try to overpower the Japanese, however there isn’t much Jeremy can do from the baseline against this opponent. Nishikori’s backhand down the line will be the key on this match, exploring the space that Chardy gives when hitting the inside out forehand.
Tennis Pick: Kei Nishikori -3 (-128) at Pinnacle
