The Davis Cup gets underway this Friday, with sixteen teams fighting for the trophy. Join us while we analyze the highest value tennis picks for the World Group 1st round.
Germany vs. Czech Republic
This Davis Cup tie takes place in Hannover and will be played on Indoor Hard Court
This will be the 15th meeting between these two countries, with the German side leading 10 – 4 on h2h. The last time they faced each other was in 2005, when the German team emerged victorious on a dramatic 3 – 2 tie with Tommy Haas winning the decisive rubber.
Germany – Philipp Kohlschreiber and Alexander Zverev should play the singles matches while Dustin Brown and Philipp Petzschner should team up to play the doubles contest.
Czech Republic – Two players born in 1985 will play the singles, Tomas Berdych and Lukas Rosol, with Tomas and the veteran Radek Stepanek playing doubles.
Philipp Kohlschreiber vs Lukas Rosol
Kohlschreiber is an extremely talented player and he’s known for raising his level when playing on German soil. Philipp played at great level recently on Indoor Hard Court, reaching ATP Sofia’s quarterfinals and ATP Rotterdam’s semifinals. Rosol can be a dangerous player with his powerful groundstrokes, but he has been far from his best lately and Kohlschreiber should emerge victorious on this rubber.
Alexander Zverev vs Tomas Berdych
Berdych is priced as heavy favorite for this contest, but it should be a closer match than the tennis odds suggest. They played couple weeks ago in Marseille where Tomas overcame the young German by 6 – 3 3 – 6 7 – 5. Despite Zverev’s good resistance, it should be Berdych to take the victory to end the first day with a 1 – 1 result.
Philipp Kohlschreiber & Philipp Petzschner vs Tomas Berdych & Radek Stepanek
Berdych and Stepanek will try to extend their remarkable record on Davis Cup with the Czech team winning 14 of their previous 16 matches together. On the German side is harder to predict who will be the two players selected by Michael Kohlmann, but we believe that the German captain will maintain the same team used on their previous tie against Dominican Republic – Kohlschreiber and Petzschner. The Czechs deserve to be favorite for this doubles contest due to their larger experience together, but Petzschner, Kohlschreiber already played some matches together on Davis Cup, and they have game to surprise the Czechs.
Philipp Kohlschreiber vs Tomas Berdych
Once again the Czechs are favorite for this contest, with Berdych leading by 8 – 1 on h2h against Kohlschreiber, but as we already mentioned, Philipp is a different player on his home country. Kohlschreiber can never be underestimated, especially if he’s playing against a player known for not being very strong mentally. With this in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Kohlschreiber winning this rubber.
Alexander Zverev vs Lukas Rosol
Zverev is a future top 10 player and his competitive mindset with 18 years old is remarkable. Alexander is playing at an outstanding level, defeating this year players like Marin Cilic, Vasek Pospisil or Gilles Simon. On the other hand and as we already referred, Rosol has been far from his best in recent weeks. Having said that, Zverev’s consistent baseline game and mental toughness should be too much on a 5thand decisive rubber against such an erratic and inconsistent player as Rosol.
The Czechs are fairly priced as favorites for this tie, but the Germans have very good chances to surprise the 2012 and 2013 champions and is possible to find value at their current price. Kohlschreiber and Zverev are playing at great level and the home support should be crucial for their victory. With this in mind, we suggest adding the German to your tennis picks at +162 on bet365.
