European sportsbook Coral has moved Qatar’s odds of being stripped of the 2022 World Cup and it being hosted by England instead.
Evidence has emerged about possible corruption in the FIFA bidding process, so there’s reasonable doubt as to whether Qatar will end up hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup at all.
Coral has cut the odds on Qatar being stripped of the 2022 World Cup from +600 to +100. Coral also changed the odds on England hosting the tournament from +1000 to +600.
According to Coral’s PR manager John Hill: “Since it was awarded the 2022 World Cup, there has been nothing but controversy around why Qatar were selected as hosts and following this latest development, the betting suggests there is a strong chance they could now be stripped of the tournament.”
Hill added that “if a new host is required, England are likely to be one of the favorites as they are one of the few countries who could hold the tournament at short notice with their infrastructure and transport.”
The detention and questioning of Platini was first reported by French investigative website Mediapart and Le Monde newspaper.
Platini was arrested as prosecutors are investigating suspected corruption and bribery in the process of awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
Last month FIFA released a statement on their website explaining why the tournament wouldn’t expand to 48 teams:
“FIFA and Qatar have jointly explored all possibilities to increase the number of participant teams from 32 to 48 teams by involving neighbouring countries at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.”
“Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process with the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now.”
The FIFA scandal of 2015 revealed that Qatar paid officials $1.5 million to vote for them to host the prestigious tournament in 2022.
The conditions workers are exposed to while preparing the tournament and geography have complicated the organization of the event. High temperatures forced the 2022 World Cup to be the first that will be held during November-December.
