The Copa America hosts open the tournament with a potentially tricky match against Ecuador, so does William Hill's Lee Phelps think an upset is on the cards?

Two of my favourite World Cup teams face up here with Copa America hosts Chile playing Ecuador. Admittedly some say Ecuador under-performed by not getting out of their group, but I for one never expected them to.

The style of play under head coach Jorge Sampaoli is perfectly suited to international football and sees his player play with a high temp, harrying their opponents when they’re on the ball and punishing them when possession switches.

The big shock came when this brand of football was too much for Spain, who they beat in the group stages, while Brazil were fortunate to get past them in the knock out phase.

Anyone looking for a kick on from the World Cup will have been disappointed with three defeats in five matches.

Chile backers will trust the likes of Claudio Bravo, Gary Medel, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez, who are all fit and ready for action following impressive seasons for their respective club sides, to take their side deep into a competition they have never won, but may just have a puncher’s chance of taking this time.

The failure to progress past the groups in Brazil cost the boss his job and has since been replaced by Gustavo Quinteros, who knows South American football like the back of his hand.

He doesn’t have much to live up to here either, with no win in nine Copa America games – a run stretching back to 2001. In fact it’s four wins from 22, with 16 losses in that too.

They have picked up recently and despite the negativity in Brazil, they did perform ok. How they didn’t beat the Swiss I’ll never know and they got a draw against France, as well as beating Honduras.

Soccer odds makers know that there’s no Antonio Valencia, but Enner Valencia and Jefferson Montero are fit and should feature in this match.

Soccer Pick
I can’t see Ecuador coping with Chile’s high pressure game and in a relatively tight encounter I think the hosts have too many match winners, but Ecuador do score goals, evidenced by their 2-1 loss to Argentina in a friendly. I can see the pressure of that first game forcing the home team to push forward more than they would like too, leaving a few gaps on the counter.
