The second round of Copa America group play features on Tuesday with a couple of Group A matchups, including USA vs. Costa Rica. We weigh in with prize soccer picks for both fixtures.

Recapping Group A, Round 1:
The first round of Group A action got underway with Jurgen Klinsmann and the Red, White and Blue taking on Colombia at Levi Stadium. To say it was a disappointing start for the USMNT is an understatement. They barely struck an audible chord in a 2-0 loss which puts them in the section’s cellar.

Not to mention their odds in outright winner markets to a hit. USA slipped out of the top five faves and fall from +800 to +2500 or thereabouts to triumph.

All is not lost yet for USA. Auspiciously, Costa Rica and Paraguay settled on a draw in their opener the following day to leave the door ajar for the hosts to revive their Copa America campaign Question is will USA capitalise or will Costa Rica heap more misery on the hosts?

Let’s not forgot, a lot rides on the section’s other matchup as well. If Colombia clinch top spot at Paraguay’s expense or Paraguay shake things up with an upset, will make all the difference and would set up a thrilling showdown in the third and final round of Group A betting.

Table 1: Group A Standings and Group A Betting Outrights and Tournament Outrights

<colgroup> <col

Second Round Matchups Preview and Soccer Picks

USA vs. Costa Rica
This is a must-win for USA if they hope to get back into Group A’s fray, but, in order to do so, they’ll have to play a lot better than they did against Colombia. The Stars and Stripes were awfully switched off in their opener. Aimless passing, stunted attacking and half-hearted defending are some of the concerns Jurgen Klinsmann takes for match day 1. Making it all worse was the fact that Colombia weren’t exactly all that much better. Then again, they really didn’t need to be as USA never really pushed or threatened.

Inasmuch as it is a must-win game for the USA, Los Ticos will consider it to be the same. After a stalemate in their opener with Paraguay, Costa Rica are sat in the middle of the table on a point, two points adrift of Colombia. A win over USA will go a long way towards advancing their bid for the knockouts.

Familiar foes in CONCACAF the pair have faced off numerous times. In their last seven meetings, Costa Rica have the edge over USA with four wins, a draw and just two losses. They won the last two meetings as well – a friendly in October of last year 1-0 and a World Cup qualifier three years ago 3-1.

Despite that head-to-head edge and a better start to their Copa America campaign as well Costa Rica enter the soccer betting market as the considerable underdogs with Pinnacle matching Los Ticos as high as +365 to win in 90 minutes. USA’s abysmal start doesn’t appear to have done them much of a disservice as they enter the second round clash with Costa Rica as firm favourites at -110 or higher, depending on your choice sportsbook. That’s optimism in no uncertain terms.

Clearly, odds makers expect USA to improve significantly otherwise they wouldn’t serve them up so short on the Copa America odds board. Arguably, USA had good form until the loss to Colombia, winning four on the trot, including back-to-back clean sheets over Ecuador and Bolivia. But Costa Rica’s form is nothing to sniff at either. They have just one defeat in their last eight fixtures in all competitions, which includes an undefeated run in their World Cup qualifying campaign that sees them currently atop their pool with a 3-1-0 record, comprised of seven goals scored and just two conceded, and they are off to a better start in Copa America. Call us crazy but we’re going against the grain with our soccer picks here. Granted the Americans are going to be desperate but Costa Rica is a tough nut to crack. As such, Costa Rica to win at +365 is our top choice soccer pick. We also do like the look of the double chance bet a draw or Costa Rica win at -105, but the soccer odds are much better on a draw no bet with Costa Rica at +225 with bet365.

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2990743, "sportsbooksIds":[43], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]
Soccer Picks: Costa Rica to win at +365 & Costa Rica win or draw at -105 & Draw No Bet Costa Rica at +225
Best Line Offered: at Pinnacle & bet365

Colombia vs. Paraguay
A lot is being made of Colombia’s somewhat poor play against USA in the first round of Copa America on Friday at Levi Stadium. It’s debatable whether the Colombians were really as bad as some of their critics would have it or whether they simply didn’t need to be any better. Let’s face it, the Americans didn’t show up for the highly-anticipated competition opener.

In Paraguay, Colombia face a familiar foe, a side they have a three-match winning streak against and that includes scoring six and conceding just one. Indeed, Colombia have won four of the last five meetings going back to 2007. The lone victory by the South American minnows was a 1-0 triumph in 2008 in World Cup qualifying.

Favourable though the head-to-head is, Paraguay aren’t a side to be trifled with. They were runners up in 2011 Copa America and finished fourth in last year’s instalment. They do have a tendency to rise to the occasion – they’ve held Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador to draws in recent South American World Cup qualifying meetings. None of which are results to sniff at so don’t go writing off Paraguay just yet.

That said, in defeating USA, Colombia extends their winning form to four straight fixtures since a 1-0 loss to Argentina at the tail end of 2015. They do have the momentum and confidence going into the second round and as a result they are the favourites on the Copa America soccer odds board at -120 or thereabouts to win in 90 minutes. By all accounts, Colombia should win this fixture but Paraguay can give them a run for their money. As such, we’re backing Colombia in money line betting markets but hedging our bets with Paraguay on the spread.

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2990745, "sportsbooksIds":[43], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]
Soccer Picks: Colombia -120 to win & Paraguay +1/2 +105
Best Line Offered: at Heritage & Bookmaker
