Fubon Guardians vs. CTBC Brothers

Saturday, May 23, 2020 – 5:05am EST

Probable Pitchers Per CPBL Website:

  • Fubon: Mike Loree (1-0 2.57 ERA)
  • CTBC: En-Sih Huang (2-0 4.50 ERA)

After rainouts since Tuesday, the CPBL hasn’t gotten a single game in since last Sunday. However, the game-time is set an hour and a half earlier than on weekdays and maybe that’s just the luck that the CPBL needs right now. Or maybe we’ll see additional rainouts.

Anyway, all rainouts will most likely be played during the Seasonal Break in July.

The Fubon Guardians (10-13) will hope to play the CTBC Brothers (12-13) in a series that looks like it’ll be a wash.

The Brothers will still pencil in En-Sih Huang as the pitcher for Saturday’s match-up. He’s 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA this season and has pitched 24 innings in four starts. Two of them against the Guardians. In his last start, against Fubon, he went seven innings, allowed six hits, one homer, and struck out seven while allowing three runs and one walk on the night.

Huang’s allowed three runs in each of his last three starts and allowed four runs in his season debut in mid-April, which was also against the Guardians. Huang has struck out at least seven batters in three of his four starts and has done a terrific job limiting walks to just five in four starts. In four starts, his two longest outings of the year came against the Guardians but he’s allowed 14 hits in those two starts and those hits can bite Huang sooner than later.

Huang has allowed one homer in each game this season and although he has an ERA of 4.50, he has a FIP of 5.82. Currently, Huang has one of the best strikeout rates in the league, trailing teammates Ariel Miranda and Jose De Paula. Huang is dominating righties as they’re hitting just .150 but lefties are hitting .348.

The Guardians will send out Mike Loree who returned to the starting rotation last week after an injury. Loree looked phenomenal going seven innings, and allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out four.

Loree has been one of the more consistent pitchers in the league and has a career ERA of 3.19 in a hitter-friendly league. He’s thrown 1149.1 innings and has a career WHIP of 1.18. In 2019, his WHIP was 1.00 in 171.2 innings.

Loree had a FIP of 3.43 last season which was the best in the league for starters who finished the entire season. He only trailed teammate Henry Sosa, but Sosa only pitched 12 games in the CPBL last season. His strike rate was near 25 percent and he walked less than five percent of batters last season.

Against the Monkeys, he shut down lefty batters to a 1.76 average while righties hit .333 in nine at-bats.

Loree is one of the better pitchers in the CPBL. He’s been in the league since 2012 and still has a career ERA of 3.19 in 1149.1 innings of work. In a hitter-friendly league where everyone seems to hammer the over, there’s Mike Loree who just shuts his opponents down.

Huang has a FIP of 5.82 and an ERA of 4.50. This means that Huang has had a little bit of luck go his way. The Guardians don’t have the best offense but as long as they put the ball in play, they’ll likely score enough for Loree.

The over in this game is set at 11.5 which is extremely low. I don’t think Loree pitches nine innings and as long as we see some bullpen action, I’ll ride the over in this one.

Uni-Lions vs. Rakuten Monkeys

Saturday, May 23, 2020 – 5:05am EST

Probable Pitchers Per CPBL Website:

  • Uni-Lions: Ryan Feierabend (1-2 4.50 ERA)
  • Rakuten: Ryan Carpenter (1-1 3.55 ERA)

The Uni-Lions (10-16) have finally given up on starting Logan Darnell. After three straight rainouts for the Uni-Lions, Ryan Feierabend is slated to start the Saturday game against the Monkeys. Darnell’s debut will have to wait.

There’s no need to worry about rest for players as these teams haven’t played a single game since Sunday. That’s why they’ll both try to send out their aces for this match-up.

Ryan Carpenter will take the hill for the Rakuten Monkeys. He’s 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA in five starts. He’s pitched well enough to win more games but the Rakuten Monkeys bullpen has been Carpenter’s enemy this season,

Carpenter has thrown 33 innings this season and his coming off a so-so performance on May 15 against the Guardians. Carpenter allowed six runs in seven innings off nine hits and struck out five. This was only his second game where he allowed more than two runs.

But while Carpenter’s ERA is 3.55, his FIP is 4.49. But his DIPS ERA is 2.86 which is second-lowest in the league currently, behind Ariel Miranda. Carpenter has done a great job limiting walks and has a high strikeout rate to begin his CPBL career. Carpenter is only walking 2.26 percent of batters this season which is the best in the league by far.

For the Uni-Lions, they’ll pitch their Ryan in Ryan Feierabend. He’s 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA through six starts this season. However, he had the best start of his CPBL career against the CTBC Brothers on May 15. He went six innings, allowed one run (none earned) on six hits and struck out six while getting his first win of the season.

But Feierabend does have one start against the Monkeys and in that start he went four innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits.

Plus, while his ERA sits at 4.50, his FIP is tremendously high at 6.17. He also walks batters near 10 percent of the time and has a DIPS ERA of 4.35.

Something interesting of note is that lefties are only hitting .258 against Feierabend this season while righties are hitting .328. His strikeout numbers remain equal but he’s walking righties way more than lefties to start the season. The right-handed bats in the Monkeys lineup should have a field day.

Rakuten Monkeys

Ryan Feierabend was impressive in his last game against the CTBC Brothers. However, in those six innings, he still allowed nine base runners including six hits and three walks in six innings.

He’s walked at least two batters per start this season and has brutal command at times. It seems like there are just one or two innings where Feierabend blows up. I’ll pitch well and then all of a sudden, he walks a batter and everything starts to fall apart.

Give me Mr. Consistency in Ryan Carpenter and the Rakuten Monkeys. We’ll have to settle with the runline though.
