Champions League: Group Stage Matchday 2 Preview and Betting Picks

Juventus vs Bayer Leverkusen

Tuesday, October 1, at Juventus Stadium

Serie A champion Juventus have been grinding out victories in typically efficient fashion this season. They have secured has five wins and one draw from six games in their domestic league, and most of their victories have been narrow and hard fought. They beat SPAL 2-0 at the weekend, following a 2-1 victory over Brescia and a 2-1 win against 10-man Verona. Maurizio Sarri’s men drew 2-2 away at Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener, and now they need a victory over Bayer Leverkusen to remain in contention to reach the knockout stage of the tournament.

Bayern Leverkusen made a disastrous start to its Champions League campaign as they lost 2-1 at home to Lokomotiv Moscow. Russian teams rarely play well away from home in Europe, and that result leaves Bayer Leverkusen facing the prospect of finishing bottom in this strong Champions League group. They lost 4-0 to Borussia Dortmund in their last away game, although they did bounce back with a 2-0 win against Union Berlin on Saturday. That left them fifth in the Bundesliga, with four wins from six games.

Genk vs Napoli

Wednesday, October 2, at Luminus Arena

Napoli made a superb start to their Champions League season when they beat defending champions Liverpool 1-0. They now head to Belgium full of confidence as they prepare to take on Genk. Carlo Ancelotti’s men have made a slightly shaky start to the new Serie A season, but they beat Brescia 2-1 at the weekend to move within six points of leaders Inter. They have plenty of firepower and Belgian forward Dries Mertens will be keen to impress on home soil.

Genk suffered a 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Red Bull Salzburg in their opener. They allowed their Austrian opponents to have 13 attempts on target and they were blown away. This Genk defence looks dreadful right now, and they drew 3-3 with an unheralded Sint-Tuiden side at the weekend. They have lost three of nine games so far in their domestic league, and they should be no match for Napoli on Wednesday.

Pick: Napoli -1.25 at -107 with Pinnacle

Barcelona vs Inter

Wednesday, October 2, at Camp Nou

Spanish champions Barcelona have won back-to-back games in La Liga to rise to fourth in the standings, two points adrift of leaders Real Madrid. They have missed World Player of the Year Lionel Messi in the opening stages of the season, as the diminutive forward has struggled with injuries. Yet they still boast plenty of attacking firepower in the form of Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann, while midfield prodigy Frenkie de Jong will be keen to stamp his authority upon the Champions League once more. Barca drew 0-0 away at Dortmund in their opener, and they will be keen to take all three points in this game, as they have landed in a real Group of Death.

Inter boast a 100% record in Serie A and they sit top of the table after beating Sampdoria 3-1 at the weekend. However, they could only draw 1-1 at home to Slavia Prague in their first Champions League game, which could be disastrous for their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of this competition. Camp Nou is a daunting place to visit, and Barcelona boast a 100% record there this season, having banged in 12 goals in three home games. Inter could therefore leave Spain empty handed on Wednesday.

Pick: Barcelona to win and over 1.5 goals at -115 with Coral
