IBF Welterweight champion Kell Brook will defend his title against unbeaten Errol Spence this Saturday night in his hometown of Sheffield, England. Let’s review the boxing odds and determine which fighter will win the day.

Champ in No Man’s Land

Kell Brook is the reigning IBF welterweight champion but his status could very well change this Saturday night. Brook dethroned Shawn Porter for the IBF welterweight crown in 2014 by majority decision and since then has been hand-fed three overmatched opponents in Jo Jo Dan, Frankie Gavin, and Kevin Bizier in defense of his title. Looking for a big payday, Brook jumped the junior middleweight division and locked horns with middleweight king Gennady Golovkin in his last fight which resulted in the first loss of his career via a fifth-round TKO.

Brook is back to 147 pounds and ready to rumble with rising American sensation Errol Spence Junior. Clearly middleweight was too big for the 5’9” Brook but doing battle at 154 pounds in the junior middleweight category would pit him against stone cold killers like the Charlo Brothers, Canelo Alvarez, Demetrius Andrade and Erislandy Lara. Thus, he has designed to defend his welterweight title but the challenger on Saturday night could very well be as lethal as any he would face in the other divisions. He is a champion plying his trade at a weight class that may no longer fit his frame but the alternatives could leave him as just another top ranked challenger waiting in line to get his shot.

And the Winner is…

Both fighters have knockout power but Errol Spence’s 86 percent KO ratio is superior to the champion and he will stalk Brook throughout. This could very well turn the champion into a counterpuncher but Spence will have to weather those storms if he suddenly morphs from the hunter to the prey. However, I believe Spence can and will overpower Brook who is coming off the first loss of his career, and one which could have a deleterious effect on his boxing psyche after getting stopped in the fifth frame against Gennady Golovkin.

The boxing odds makers have installed the challenger as a fairly sizeable favorite and with good reason. He is younger, taller and enjoys a three-inch reach advantage over Brook. This should be a dandy from start to finish and will either catapult Errol Spence into the rarified air of elite boxers with a world of opportunity for big money fights down the road or ensconce Kell Brook as the logical choice to throw down with WBA and WBC champ Keith Thurman. We believe it will be the former and therefore include Errol Spence in our boxing picks for Saturday night.
