The Stampeders will be looking for their second-straight road win as underdogs in an intriguing inter-division tilt against the Tiger-Cats, who are 3-1 both straight-up and against the spread in their first four games this year. Last week’s 37-10 road win against Saskatchewan as a five-point underdog moved Calgary to 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS on the year.

Calgary has been the team to beat in the CFL for the previous three seasons, but some cracks in the foundation have dramatically closed the gap right across the board. Change over in personnel combined with a serious injury to their starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has created more questions than answers for the defending CFL Champions.
The Stampeders started the season with a shaky 32-28 loss to Ottawa as nine-point home favorites. Following a Week 2 bye, they regrouped to knock-off British Columbia 36-32, but they could not cover as heavy 10.5-point favorites at home. In the absence of Mitchell, they closed five-point road underdogs in the recent romp over Saskatchewan.
Nick Arbuckle is Calgary’s new starting quarterback for the foreseeable future and he filled in nicely for Mitchell by completing 19-of-22 passing attempts for 262 yards and two touchdown throws against zero interceptions. The ground game did its part with 122 rushing yards and a score on 21 attempts.
The Tiger-Cats’ three-game winning streak (SU and ATS) came to a crashing halt last Thursday with a surprising 36-29 loss to Montreal as heavy 13.5-point road favorites. They had just beaten the Alouettes 41-10 in Week 3 as 12.5-point home favorites a week after trouncing Toronto 64-14 as four-point favorites on the road
Most of this offensive firepower can be attributed to the play of Jeremiah Masoli as the leading passer in the CFL. Through four starts, he has completed 70.1 percent of his 134 attempts for 1,325 total passing yards and seven touchdowns. He has also been picked off five times to add a bit of concern to this Saturday night’s matchup.
Head-to-Head Betting Trends
- Calgary has beaten Hamilton SU in the last five meetings and it has a 6-1 edge ATS in the last seven matchups in this inter-division tilt. The total has stayed UNDER in 10 of the last 13 meetings in Hamilton.

- My perfect CFL record came to an end when last week’s Winnipeg at Ottawa game failed to go OVER 54 points. I am going back to a pointspread pick this week by taking Calgary SU over Hamilton this Saturday night.
CFL ‘Best Bet’ Record: 3-1
Other CFL Week 5 Games:

Each of these teams need a win to keep pace in the early West Division title race. BC is coming of its first win of the season, but I like Edmonton’s chances to win this game SU on the road.
Friday, July 12
Toronto has been as bad as advertised in its SU 0-3 start and I do not see the Argonauts scoring enough points to cover against the 3-0 Blue Bombers.
Saturday, July 13
Montreal may have stunned Hamilton last week to pick up its first win of the year, but it is facing a RedBlacks’ squad coming off a bad loss at home. Ottawa gets the job done right this time around with the win at home.
