The playoff picture in the CFL is coming into focus heading into Week 18 of the regular season and there are a few key matchups on this weekend’s schedule that should go a long way towards filling in any of the current missing pieces starting with Hamilton on the road this Friday night against Ottawa so we can start thinking about some wise CFL picks.

After coming up short with last week’s parlay, I dug deep into all four CFL matchups in Week 18 based on BetOnline’s betting lines to come up with a pair of CFL picks to put together as this week’s top two-team play. When it comes to betting on football north of the border you can always count on BetOnline as one of the top sportsbooks for online sports betting.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ottawa RedBlacks

Pointspread: Ottawa -3

Total: 53.5

Betting Preview

The Tiger-Cats blew a golden opportunity to tighten things up in the East Division race with last week’s 30-29 loss to Ottawa as 2.5-point home favorites. They have now lost four of their last five games straight-up while going 0-5 against the spread. Jeremiah Masoli filled in for an injured Zach Collaros in last Friday’s loss and while he did throw for 278 yards and three touchdowns he was also picked off twice. Collaros remains questionable for this Friday night’s contest.

Ottawa actually clinched a playoff spot with last week’s win, but at an even 7-7-1 SU with a 6-9 record ATS, this speaks more to the overall weakness of the East Division this season. The RedBlacks did get some solid play from veteran quarterback Henry Burris in last week’s win. He completed 27-of-39 attempts for 393 yards and his lone touchdown pass of the game went to Ernest Jackson, who ended the game with five catches for 106 yards.

Betting Trends

The Tiger-Cats have failed to cover in their last five road games and the stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of those contests.

The RedBlacks are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 East Division games and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven division games.

Last week’s win against the Tiger-Cats extended Ottawa’s current winning streak in this series to four games both SU and ATS. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings.

Betting Prediction

Playing defense does not appear to be a big concern for either of these teams given the way that the points added up on the scoreboard in last week’s clash at Hamilton. I think we are in for the same kind of offensive shootout this time around as well with the total going OVER the current 53.5-point line for this game.

Edmonton Eskimos at British Columbia Lions

Pointspread: BC -2.5

Total: 59

Betting Preview

The battle for third place in the West Division pits the resurgent 8-7 Edmonton Eskimos on the road against the 9-6 Lions. The Eskimos are coming off a bye and their current three-game winning streak (SU and ATS) started with a 27-23 victory against BC on Sept. 23 as slight 1.5-point favorites at home. The total stayed UNDER 54 points in that game after going OVER in three previous meetings. Quarterback, Mike Reilly comes into this division clash with the second-most passing yards (5,054) and the second-most touchdown throws (25) in the CFL.

BC came up just short two weeks in a row against Winnipeg in back-to-back losses by a combined five points. This has dropped its overall record to 9-6 SU while still going a healthy 10-5 ATS. The Lions have already clinched a playoff spot; however, it cannot afford a third-straight division loss. The Lions scored a total of 67 points in those two setbacks to Winnipeg to help send the total OVER for the fourth time in their last five games. Jonathon Jennings passed for 327 yards and three scores in last week’s 35-32 loss to Winnipeg and on the year he is third in the league in both passing yards (4,405) and touchdown throws (20).

Betting Trends

The Eskimos have covered ATS in seven of their last nine road games and the total has gone OVER in their last six games following an SU win.

The Lions are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following an SU loss and the total has gone OVER in four of their last five home games.

Head-to-head in this West Division tilt, BC holds a 7-3 edge ATS in the last 10 meetings including a 4-1 edge ATS in its last five home games against Edmonton. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings in BC.

 Betting Prediction

This game also has “shootout” written all over it in a battle between two of the most prolific passing teams in the CFL. The total line has once again been set rather high in this matchup, but this time around these bitter division rivals will exceed that number.
