Nichols leads Blue Bombers

The Calgary Stampeders continue to establish themselves as the team to beat in the CFL this season with a straight-up 12 game winning streak, but the defending champion Edmonton Eskimos proved that it will not go down without a fight following a key win last week. Join our professional capper as he breaks down Friday's action and gives two free CFL picks.

I stayed hot with my recent CFL picks by cashing in on Saskatchewan’s stunning upset of Ottawa and the Over in Saturday’s British Columbia at Winnipeg game. After breaking down all four CFL matchups in Week 17 based on BetOnline’s betting lines, here are two more picks you can take to the bank. Another thing you can bank on when it comes to betting on football north of the border is BetOnline as one of the best online sportsbooks in the game today.

Ottawa RedBlacks vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Pointspread: Hamilton -2
Total: 53

Betting Preview

Ottawa is just a half-game ahead of Hamilton for the lead in the East Division at 6-7-1 straight-up following its fifth loss (both SU and against the spread) in its last seven games. Last Friday it fell to Saskatchewan 32-30 in overtime as a 6.5-point home favorite so its margin for error in this upcoming home-and-home series against the Tiger-Cats is not that wide. The RedBlacks turned to veteran quarterback Henry Burris for a spark in last week’s loss, but the holes in their defense could be the bigger issue after allowing an average of 33 points over its last four games.

The Tiger-Cats are coming off a much-needed bye week after dropping three of their last four games SU while going a costly 0-4 ATS. They also lost to Saskatchewan 20-18 on Sept. 24 as 5.5-point road favorites before going into the bye week with a 36-17 loss to Calgary as 2.5-point underdogs at home. Hamilton has really struggled to put points on the board the past few weeks with an average of 19 points in its last four games. Making things worse is a shoulder injury to quarterback Zach Collaros that has him listed as out for this game.

Betting Trends

The RedBlacks are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games and the total has gone OVER in three of their last four games on the road.

The Tiger-Cats have failed to cover ATS in four of their last six games at home and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games overall.

Head-to-head in this East Division tilt, the Tiger-Cats have a 4-2 SU edge in their last six home games against Ottawa and the total has stayed UNDER in six of the last eight meetings in Hamilton.

Betting Prediction

Somebody has to win the East Division this season and given that these two rivals have to face one another twice in the next two weeks, I am leaning towards the home team in this matchup. Lay the points and take the Tiger-Cats to draw first blood with a win this week both SU and ATS even with Collaros out of the lineup.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at British Columbia Lions

Pointspread: BC -5.5

Total: 54.5

Betting Preview

The Blue Bombers are 9-6 SU (8-6-1 ATS) on the year and they have already drawn first blood in this West Division home-and-home showdown with last Saturday’s crucial 37-35 victory against BC as a 1.5-point home favorite. They are now in position to take sole possession of second place in the standings with a sweep. The big concern for this Friday’s matchup has to be a Winnipeg defense that was torched for 422 yards through the air and another 91 yards on the ground in last week’s tight win.

BC still has a slight half-game lead for second place in the West at 9-5 SU and it has been one of the best betting teams in the CFL this season at 10-4 ATS. Costly turnovers took their toll in last week’s loss with Jonathon Jennings throwing two interceptions and it did not help that the Lions spotted Winnipeg a 21-point lead early in the game. The big plus for this game is that the Lions have been tough out at home lately with a 3-1 record both SU and ATS in their last four games at BC Place.

Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers are 5-1 both SU and ATS in their last six road games and the total has gone OVER in seven or their last eight games overall.

The Lions have won four of their last six home games both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in three of their last four games played at home.

With last week’s win, Winnipeg is now 4-2 both SU and ATS in its last six games against BC and the total has stayed UNDER in 17 of the last 24 meetings between these two West Division rivals.

Betting Prediction

I am once again leaning towards the home team in another two-game series between division rivals. Look for BC to get off to a much faster start this time around, while also doing a much better job at taking care of the ball. This should be another shootout on the scoreboard, but take the Lions to win and cover this Friday night at home, and wait for oddsmakers to update the lines across the board.
