Calgary Looks To Get Back On Track Saturday Night Against The Alouettes

Calgary Looks To Get Back On Track Saturday Night Against The Alouettes

Last Thursday, Calgary lost the straight-up battle against Winnipeg but it won the bet by covering the closing spread in my CFL ‘best bet’ of the week. I am sticking with the Stampeders again this week for my top betting pick.

Montreal Alouettes at Calgary Stampeders

Free Pick: Take Calgary -7 against Montreal

Best Line Offered: 5Dimes

Montreal has been a tough team to figure out this season. With seven games in the books, it is 3-4 straight-up and 4-3 against the spread. The Alouettes have already beaten Hamilton and Edmonton SU as home underdogs, but they recently lost to Ottawa 30-27 as 6.5-point favorites at home. Last week’s 17-10 loss to Saskatchewan as three-point home underdogs raises the level of concern playing this game on the road.

Antonio Pipkin and Matt Shiltz combined for a total of 90 passing yards against the Eskimos last week while the offense added just 51 yards running the ball. This unit also gave up a pair of scores as part of a rather dismal effort given some past success. That game was called in the third quarter due to weather concerns, but Montreal did nothing with the time it did have on the field. One issue is a lingering injury to starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. He remains questionable for Saturday’s game.

Calgary had a golden opportunity to take sole possession of the first place in the West Division but it came up just short in last Thursday’s 26-24 loss to Winnipeg closing as a 7.5-point road underdog. The Stampeders have covered in their last two games following a costly 1-5 start ATS. They are now 5-3 SU through their first eight contests. The total went OVER against the Blue Bombers for the first time in their last six contests.

Bo Levi Mitchell has been upgraded to questionable coming off a chest injury. In his absence, Nick Arbuckle has thrown for 1,733 yards and seven touchdowns against five interceptions. He has completed 71.1 percent of his 201 passing attempts, but inconsistent play has dogged this offense all season long. Picking up the pace for Calgary is a much better effort on the defensive side of the ball.

Head-to-Head Betting Trends

–Calgary has won five of its last seven games against the Alouettes SU and it has covered in six of its last nine home games against this inter-division foe. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings at McMahon Stadium.

Free Betting Pick

The Stampeders definitely miss Mitchell at quarterback, but I am counting on their defense to step things up on Saturday night by shutting down Montreal. Betting the UNDER in this game is another good way to go but I will lay the touchdown spread and take Calgary ATS.

CFL ‘Best Bet’ Record: 4-5

Other CFL Week 10 Games:

Thursday, Aug. 15

British Columbia at Winnipeg (-11.5) Total Line: 51.5 (8:30 p.m.)

BC could be the worst team in the CFL this season, but I do not trust Winnipeg covering such a big spread. Take the OVER in this one as the points add up for each team.

Friday, Aug. 16

Edmonton (-9.5) at Toronto Total Line: 49 (7:30 p.m.)

Toronto is coming off a bye after stunning Hamilton in Week 8 in its first SU win of the season. The Eskimos should get the SU win, but I will take the 9.5 points on the home team.

Saturday, Aug. 17

Hamilton (-3.5) at Ottawa Total Line: 49.5 (4 p.m.)

Hamilton (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS) now leads Ottawa by three games in the East Division with the RedBlacks losing five of their last six games SU. I am going with the road team SU and ATS in this matchup.
