I ended the CFL regular season with a split in my top two picks in Game 2 of a pair of two home-and-home series. Using the opening spread and total line, the following are my top two CFL Picks for this Sunday’s games.

The 2016 CFL Grey Cup Playoffs get underway this Sunday with a pair of matchups in the Division Semifinal Round. The Edmonton Eskimos come in as defending champions as well as a crossover team from the West to face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The West semi features a showdown between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the British Columbia Lions

East Division Semifinal

Edmonton Eskimos vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Pointspread: Edmonton -2.5

Total: 56.5

Betting Preview

The Eskimos have a clear path back to the Grey Cup title game as a crossover team from the West Division. They overcame a slow start to finish the regular season 10-8 straight-up and 8-9-1 against the spread. This includes a 5-1 run both SU and ATS in their last six games. Mike Reilly led the CFL in passing yards this season with 5,554 yards and he was second in touchdown throws with 28. Edmonton was second only to Calgary in scoring with an average of 30.5 points a game.

Hamilton was the second-best team in the East, but that is not saying all that much at 7-11 SU (6-12 ATS) on the year. The Tiger-Cats posted just two SU wins in their last eight contests while going 1-7 ATS. Overall, they failed to cover the spread in seven of nine games at home and the total stayed UNDER in three of their last five home games. Hamilton comes into this matchup averaging a respectable 28.2 points a game, but it has allowed just as many points a game on defense.

 Betting Trends

The Eskimos are 5-1 ATS in their last six division semifinals and they are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five playoff games on the road.

The Tiger-Cats have failed to cover in their last five home games and they are 1-5 ATS in their last six games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games following a SU loss.

Head-to-head in this inter-division tilt, Edmonton is 4-0 ATS in its last four road games against Hamilton and the total has stayed UNDER in all four of those games.

 Betting Prediction

I would probably go with any team from the West over a team from the East in a SU matchup and given just how well the Eskimos are playing right now I will gladly lay the 2.5 points on the road.

 West Division Semifinal

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs British Columbia Lions

Pointspread: BC -5

Total: 55

Betting Preview

The Blue Bombers won three of their last four games (SU and ATS) to finish the season at 11-7 SU with a 10-7-1 record ATS. Behind quarterback Matt Nichols, this offense was able to score an average of 27.6 points a game. He only started 13 games this season, but he was fifth on the list in total yards (3,666) and tied for fourth in touchdown throws (18).

Earlier in October, BC lost a pair of games to Winnipeg both SU and ATS in a home-and-home series that saw a combined total of 139 points get posted to the scoreboard. Since those two setbacks, the Lions are 3-0 (SU and ATS) in their last three games. They come into this matchup as the third-highest scoring team in the league with an average of 30.3 points a game and they have allowed the exact amount of points on defense (454) as the Blue Bombers.

 Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games, but they have failed to cover in their last four division semifinals games. The total has gone OVER in their last six road games.

The Lions are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four postseason games and they are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has gone OVER in eight of their last nine playoff games.

Winnipeg is 4-0-1 ATS in the last five meetings overall and it has covered the spread in its last four road games against BC. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings.

 Betting Prediction

Winnipeg got the best of the season series by a combined five points and see another close battle this time around. That is why I am taking the Blue Bombers and the five points in a game that seems destined to once again go OVER the total.
