I cashed in on last week’s CFL parlay with a play on the 'over' in what turned out to be two very high-scoring games. It is Week 7 of the CFL regular season, and I see another golden opportunity to make some money on the total in a pair of this week's games.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Ottawa Redblacks (-3, 58.5)

The Blue Bombers bring a 3-2 record into this inter-division clash both straight-up and against the spread. They have one of the most prolific scoring offenses in the CFL with an average of 33.8 points per game, but the other side of the ball has been a whole other story with a defense that is giving up an average of 35.8 points. Winnipeg quarterback Matt Nichols has completed close to 70 percent of his throws this season for 1,458 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The defending league champs have gotten off to a rough 1-4-1 SU start, but Ottawa has been good for bettors at 5-1 ATS. It is coming off a bye week after playing two games in the span of six days in Week 5. The Redblacks have been hampered by a brutal early schedule, but they still have a very potent offensive attack behind quarterback Trevor Harris with an average of 27.3 PPG. He is second in the league in passing yards with 1,939 and he leads the CFL in touchdown throws with 12.

  • Winnipeg has covered ATS in its last five road games and the total has gone OVER in all five of those games.
  • Ottawa is 4-1 ATS in its last five games at home and the total has gone OVER in six of its last eight home games.
  • Head-to-head in this inter-division clash, the Blue Bombers have a 4-1 edge ATS in their last five road games against the RedBlacks and the total has gone OVER four of the last six meetings in Ottawa.

I like Ottawa at home coming off a bye to cover the three-point spread, but my ‘best bet’ pick in the front end of this week’s CFL parlay is the 'over.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at BC Lions (-5.5, 56.5)

The Roughriders improved to 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS with last week’s 38-27 victory against Toronto as 2.5-point home favorites. They got a solid effort from Kevin Glenn at quarterback with 340 yards passing and four scoring strikes. On the year, he has thrown for 1,598 yards and 11 touchdowns while connecting on 70.8 percent of his 202 passing attempts. Cameron Marshall is third in the league in rushing with 316 yards on 57 carries to also help this offense average 28.2 PPG.

At 4-2 SU (3-3 ATS), BC has beaten every team it has faced this season with the exception of Edmonton. The Lions have averaged 31.7 points over their first six games behind both Jonathon Jennings and Travis Lulay at quarterback. Both players have been able to move the ball down the field through the air with a combined 1,952 passing yards. Lulay has the added dimension of getting the ball in the end zone with is legs after running for five touchdowns in the three games playing in place of the injured Jennings.

  • Saskatchewan have covered the spread in five of its last seven road games and the total has gone OVER in four of its last six games overall.
  • BC is 2-4 ATS in its last six games at home and the total has gone OVER in six of its last eight home games.
  • The Lions have won seven of their last nine home games against Saskatchewan both SU and ATS and the total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings overall.

This is another matchup where I would stick with the home team both SU and ATS, but I am also convinced that the better way to go in this one is the 'over.'
