The women’s strawweight division takes center stage as poster girl Paige VanZant takes on Michelle Waterson. Let’s analyze this matchup as well as one other and prepare to cash in our UFC picks Saturday night.

Paige VanZant vs. Michelle Waterson

Paige VanZant (7-2, 2 KO’s, 2 Subs) may look like a stunning, petite sports model but she can bang with the best in her 115-pound division. Her last performance was perhaps her finest moment when she delivered a perfectly timed switch kick that landed flush on the head of Bec Rawlings. VanZant proceeded to swarm the felled Aussie with a flurry of punches that ended the match in the second round, back in August on the UFC on Fox event.

Michelle Waterson (13-4, 3 KO’s, 8 Subs) is a southpaw with a lethal submission game. Ironically, two of her four losses have come via submission but her first foray into the UFC, after leaving Invicta, proved to be successful when she submitted Angela Magana in the third round of their July 12th battle. Waterson made the jump from atom weight to strawweight in that fight and will do the same in her fight against VanZant.

VanZant is a clincher and she will try to bully her way over the slightly smaller Waterson. However, Waterson is a former Invicta champ with more experience and a better submission game. She will try to find her range against a charging VanZant and pick her off until the fight hits the floor. I believe this will be one that will go to the judges’ cards and Waterson will get the nod based on ground control and staving off VanZant’s relentless pressure. Waterson is the winner by decision in our UFC picks.

Sage Northcutt vs. Mickey Gall

Sage Northcutt burst onto the UFC scene as a martial arts prodigy and floored all comers with an athleticism that matched his physique. However, he finally ran into a real scrapper with serious MMA chops in Bryan Barberena. Northcutt unleashed his withering arsenal of precise strikes and exotic kicks yet it did little to deter Barberena, who weathered the first round assault and expertly submitted the gassed Northcutt in the following round via triangle choke. It was the first taste of defeat for Northcutt who may have very well overlooked and underestimated the blue-collar brawler Barberena. He will be pitted against a more athletic but far less experienced opponent on Saturday night in Mickey Gall

Speaking of which, Gall was the side attraction to the carnival that was C.M. Punk morphing from professional wrestler to MMA warrior. Gall has martial arts pedigree and quickly dispatched the MMA neophyte via a first-round submission. Gall is now three-for-three in his MMA appearances, all submissions in the opening round.

Sage Northcutt tasted defeat for the first time in his MMA career and it was probably the best thing that could have happened to the talented 20-year-old. Northcutt possesses a vast arsenal of karate techniques that are normally reserved for the dojo, as attempting to execute them against an experienced MMA fighter leaves too much exposure if those kicks swing and miss. Northcutt will be more equipped cardio-wise as evidenced by his three-round decision over Enrique Marin in his last bout. He melted at 170 when facing Barberena and dropped back down to lightweight in his last fight but is back at welterweight to fight Gall. Gall’s submission skills look impressive but I’m not sure he can withstand a huge jump in class when facing Northcutt. I am shocked that the UFC odds makers have made this a pick in most shops so we will take the value with the kid from Katy, Texas.
