Canelo Alvarez will battle Callum Smith with Alvarez’s WBA “regular” super middleweight title and Smith’s WBA “super” super middleweight title. Here’s a complete preview, including updated boxing odds and our betting pick.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Callum Smith

Saturday, December 19, 2020 – 11:05 PM EST at Alamodome in San Antonio

Matchroom and Canelo Promotions recently announced that the WBC World Super-Middleweight title will also be on the line in this fight. Alvarez and Smith have won WBC straps before and whoever emerges victorious on Saturday will have to face WBC No. 2 ranked Avni Yildrim within 90 days.

β€œI am delighted that the winner of this fight will be crowned the WBC World champion at 168lbs,” promoter Eddie Hearn said. "Canelo Alvarez is the pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet, and Callum Smith is the number one Super-Middleweight on the planet – so it is fitting for the winner to proudly wear the green and gold belt on December 19."

Canelo Alvarez

Alvarez ended his working relationship with longtime promoter Golden Boy in November and this will be his first fight since becoming a free agent. Alvarez dominated Sergey Kovalev and knocked him out in the 11th round to win the WBO light heavyweight title on November 2nd, 2019 but he hasn't fought since because of the COVID-19 pandemic and not being able to secure an opponent.

"Smith is a great opponent, the best at 168 pounds," Alvarez said. "He's a tall, strong opponent that motivates me a lot and one that, despite everything that happened in 2020, will allowed me to close the year with a flourish."

Callum Smith

Callum Smith, ESPN's No. 1-ranked super middleweight, won the WBA "super" super middleweight title by knocking out George Groves in the seventh round of the World Boxing Super Series final at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah on September 28th, 2018. Smith defended his title twice, a TKO victory in the third round against Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam on June 1st, 2019 at Madison Square Garden in New York and a unanimous decision victory against John Ryder on November 23rd, 2019 at Echo Arena, Liverpool.

"The better the opponent, the better the performance from myself. This one will be no different. On paper, I'm the toughest fight for him. This is a fight that really excites me, and I definitely believe I beat him."

Smith's game plan should be pretty simple, he has to keep Alvarez on the outside. Smith has a seven-inch height advantage. In his last fight, Smith also had a significant height advantage over John Ryder but he wasn't able to keep him bottled up on the outside. Alvarez is the pound-for-pound king but he knows that he is up against a fighter in his prime and dominant at the weight. Both men will have over a year of ring rust to shake off, making this a toss-up fight. Smith has a legitimate chance to win but his best version has to show up. Alvarez's big-fight experience can be the difference. I like the Over in this fight.
