Billy Joe Saunders vs. Saul Alvarez
Saturday, May 08, 2021 – 10:00 PM EDT at AT&T Stadium
Can Billy Joe Saunders Step Up To Canelo’s Level?
Billy Joe Saunders is a more than capable fighter. This is not a push over for Canelo Alvarez, like his last fight was. However, the biggest question coming into this fight is whether or not Saunders can level up to compete with Alvarez. This may seem an odd question for someone who is 30-0 with fourteen knockouts in his career. The issue is he has never faced anyone of the level of Canelo. Truth is, though, most fighters have not faced one of Canelo’s ilk, because there are very few fighters of his caliber out there.
Saunders is a crafty fighter who can come at you in any number of ways. He can be a dodgy opponent to do battle with and that will help give him a chance to beat Canelo. He will have to keep Canelo off balance and strike when the opportunities present themselves. Saunders has shown flashes of being able to do that in his career. He is certainly capable of making this the fight of his life.
Can Canelo Keep Rolling Along?
Canelo Alvarez just keeps rolling along and winning fights, unless your name is Gennady Golovkin or Floyd Mayweather, Jr, that is. He is so dominant and is likely the pound for pound king of the boxing world today. He has shown he can be a power puncher, he can play defense or he can simply out box his opponents. He is a versatile and seasoned champion.
I don’t know if that makes Canelo invincible, though the betting odds may suggest that. He can still be susceptible to an opponent who can create unique angles and work his way inside past Canelo’s defenses.
The betting public has bet Canelo heavily coming into this fight and with good reason. We all know how good he is and we know what he is capable of doing. However, I think there is some value on Billy Joe Saunders at this point. This is a very talented fighter who is unorthodox in a way that will certainly give him the proverbial “puncher’s chance”.
Having said that, I think Canelo still wins this fight. He’s too good and too experienced to lose the fight. I do think that Saunders will last the entire fight though, so that creates a way to find value and bet this contest.
