Buuuuuuurp! July 4th Signals It's Time To Eat A Lot Of Hot Dogs

It is too late for you to qualify for this year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest – jeez, even the contest’s name is mouthful.

Anyway, it’s too late.

But there’s always the next food, the next contest and the opportunity to gorge on it. Or you can get your satisfaction by betting on the winners and several prop bets at several of SBR’s top-rated sportsbooks.

Here are some of the foods you can consume for prize money in the next few months: Gyoza (Japanese dumplings), bratwurst, Buffalo wings, pork rolls, tamales, Indian tacos, and sloppers (cheeseburgers buried in chili).

If just reading this list gives you indigestion, we understand. We needed a Tums as we typed it.

And how does Nathan’s champ Joey Chestnut keep doing this contest after contest, year after year? And he just doesn’t have the hot dog record, he is No. 1 in consuming chicken wings, eggs, glazed doughnuts, pork ribs and pork sandwiches, meat pies, asparagus, Krystal hamburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, tamales, salt potatoes, burritos, cheesesteaks, funnel cakes, shrimp wontons, gyros, pepperoni rolls, fish tacos, Twinkies, shrimp cocktails, mutton sandwiches, Hostess Donettes, and a whole turkey.

Which prompted up to consider how does one actually get through one of these contests? And what is the aftermath and do we really want to know?

First you need to train, you just can’t eat that much food, that fast without risking choking to death. And then there is the “reversal of fortune,’ when your body begins to reject what your eating and you vomit. People who frequent these contests actually train to suppress their gag reflex. They also train their jaw, specifically their masseter muscle, by chewing gum, up to five pieces at a time to strengthen their jaws? Had enough, yet? We have.

And after having read about the aftermath, we’re going to spare your gag reflex. If you gotta know, Google has the answers.

Bovada, too, it seems is consumed with all things competitive eating offering more than a dozen prop bets on the Nathan Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest from whether PETA will protest, if there will be an “eat-off,’ how many Chestnut will eat in the first minute and midway of the contest, and how many will he eat in total?

There also are several head-to-head or dog-to-dog contest between competitors, such as Matt Stonie vs. Geoffery Esper, Esper vs. Carmen Cincotti; Cincotti vs. Chestnut.

Plus there are similar bets on the women’s side as well feature last year’s winner Miki Sudo.

Odds on the contest are posted at Bovada, BetOnline, 5Dimes and Pinnacle.
