Bundesliga Soccer Picks: Bayern Munich vs Augsburg

Bayern Munich's season is in danger of ending in the next few days with a very difficult second leg of their Champions League semifinal to come. William Hill's Lee Phelps looks at the odds in their next league game for his free betting pick.

The focus on this game for Bayern Munich must be virtually zip. They have won the title, are no longer in the German cup, but have both eyes firmly on Tuesday night and the return leg against Barcelona. They of course have a mountain to climb trailing 3-0.

Interestingly Bayern have only lost once to Augsburg and that was when they had wrapped up the 2013/14 Bundesliga title.

Bayern Munich
Wednesday may sting Bayern into action this weekend, although the main thing underpinning this article must be that Bayern don’t need to win this game or even try to win. I find it hard to believe they won’t use this as a chance to warm up and get a win. Soccer odds makers know it’s now three games without a win, although they only lost on penalties to Dortmund in the German Cup.

Bayern have got a great record against Augsburg, winning six of their seven meetings, conceding a total of just three goals. As I said that solitary defeat came last season at this stage. Interestingly they remained without a win in their three league games immediately after securing the title in 2013/14 (two defeats).

The 2-0 loss in Leverkusen was Pep Guardiola’s fifth defeat in his 65th BL game. They have always come after the winter break (2 in 2013/14, 3 in 2014/15).

Bayern have already equaled the record of 21 clean sheets in a BL season. The record for the fewest goals conceded in a campaign (18) could still be broken – Guardiola’s side have let in 15 goals so far.

Robert Lewandowski has scored eight goals in seven BL games against the weekend opponents, the Pole has only netted more top-flight goals against Freiburg (10) and Hannover (nine).

Augsburg
The fact that Markus Weinzierl’s team are sixth in the Bundesliga demonstrates the weakness in the division away from the top few. They aren’t fantastic at home, don’t score that many goals, aren’t defensively that great and to be honest their away record is poor.

Their overall form shows just two wins in 12 and they have lost five successive away games. They have lost more away games than any other club in division (11), winning four and not drawing any. Plus they have only scored 11 goals, the third fewest in the ladder.

Soccer Picks
The fact Bayern have got their eyes on a different prize means the bookies are giving us 1.57 (4/7) for a home win here. It’s obvious to say they would be much shorter if this was a meaningful game.

I’m looking at a relatively comfortable win here against a team who struggle to get results on the road. One man who was annoyed to be taken off against Barcelona was Thomas Muller, so I’m picking him to vent some frustration with my soccer picks here. He’s also scored in the four games when he’s started against them.
