Kovalev Tastes Defeat in Chapter 1

Sergey Kovalev had reeled off 30 wins without a loss before taking on the immaculate Andre Ward in November of last year. He lost three light heavyweight titles on that night to a man many proclaim as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. But on June 17th he will be back in the ring to avenge his unanimous decision loss, with all three judges scoring the fight 114-113 in favor of Ward. It was a controversial decision as Kovalev knocked Ward to the canvas in the early going but as the fight wore on Ward began to dominate and Kovalev’s hands of stone began to soften.

Kovalev has enormous punching power and can turn out the lights with one clean shot. Ward has already felt the devastating right cross that sent him to his knees in their previous fight but much to his credit, the former gold medal Olympian gathered himself and remained upright the rest of the fight scoring the unanimous verdict from ringside. Ward is more of a tactician and has a thunderous left jab that works the body as much as the head. His style is reminiscent of Floyd Mayweather in that he scores continuously with his precision guided lasers from awkward angles. He is a difficult fighter to not only defend but to advance upon as well. His repertoire is complete in that he can counterpunch flawlessly when attacked or unleash a dizzying array of blows when he goes on the offensive.

Kovalev Evens the Score

Although Andre Ward possesses a world-class skill set, Sergey Kovalev proved he could not only stand and trade but more importantly go the distance with the ultimate tactician. Many believe it was, in fact, Kovalev whose hand should have been raised but whether you subscribe to that notion or not, you cannot dispute he lost in razor-thin fashion.

The boxing odds makers have installed the champion Ward as high as a -155 favorite and we just don’t see that degree of separation between the two. Kovalev will most assuredly be in the hunt early and be more apt to end this fight early instead of taking his chances in the deep waters as he did in the first match. Let’s grab the juice that the oddsmakers are giving us and watch Kovalev put that reach advantage to good use as he does enough damage early to stop Ward from being effective late. Add Sergey Kovalev to your boxing picks this Saturday night.
