It’s an excellent Saturday of boxing action on July 14, including a matchup in Germany for the WBA “regular” super middleweight title. Tyron Zeuge is an Intertops favorite to keep his belt.

Most of the attention in the boxing world on Saturday, July 14 will be focused on Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as all-time great Manny Pacquiao looks to prove he’s not washed up when he takes on Lucas Matthysse for Matthysse's WBA "regular" welterweight title. Pacquiao is a -200 Intertops favorite, but it’s somewhat sad he has stooped to this level. Hey, a payday is a payday.

However, we’re here to look at the matchup between Tyron Zeuge and Rocky Fielding for Zeuge's WBA "regular" super middleweight title. That bout is from Offenburg, Germany, and can be seen on Sky Sports overseas.

Currently, the WBA has two champions at super middleweight (168 pounds): George Groves and Zeuge. Groves will defend the full version of that title against Callum Smith in the World Boxing Super Series this September. Groves is Ring Magazine’s top-ranked super middleweight and a -150 favorite over Callum. Zeuge is a -350 Intertops favorite to beat Fielding (+250) and should that happen and Groves also win, it’s considered likely that the two would meet in early 2019 for the undisputed WBA super middleweight crown.

[/]{"component":"video", "type":"youtube", "url":"", "videoSize":"Large" }[/]

Zeuge is a 26-year-old from Germany and is 22-0-1 with 12 knockouts and is trained by former two-time world champion Juergen Braehmer. That lone blemish was a majority draw against Giovanni De Carolis in July 2016, but the two fought again in November that year and Zeuge won by knockout. He was last in the ring against Isaac Ekpo in March and won by second-round TKO. Ekpo was knocked down once in the first (only the bell saved him) and once in the second, after which the referee stopped the bout. Zeuge was a huge -800 Intertops favorite there. He also had beaten Ekpo in March 2017, by five-round technical decision after the fight ended early due to a clash of heads that opened a deep cut over Zeuge's right eye.

Fielding is rated No. 4 in the WBA’s super middleweight division. The 30-year-old Englishman is 26-1 with 14 knockouts. That loss was to Smith for the vacant BBBofC British super middleweight title in November 2015. Fielding was no match, getting knocked down three times in the first round before it was called. Fielding has won five straight since, albeit against so-so competition. He last fought in March, beating Karel Horejsek on points in England.

Fielding has been training with WBO interim featherweight champion Carl Frampton. Even though it’s for a secondary title, this will be the first world title challenge for Fielding. He is the second British opponent for Zeuge, who beat Paul Smith on points in Germany in June 2017.

Paul Smith said he thinks his countryman Fielding has the punch power to get Zeuge’s respect but questions whether he has the right mentality to take the German’s title.

“It’s all on Fielding and mentally we need to see what he’s like,” Smith said. “I’m not saying he froze against Callum. He came out fighting, to be honest with you. But he’s very mentally unreliable. He relies on his nerves. He gets very nervous, in my opinion.”

The other super middleweight champions are David Benavidez (WBC), James DeGale and Jose Uzcategui (IBF) and Gilberto Ramirez (WBO). Fielding had previously been linked to fights against DeGale and Ramirez.

Intertops Sportsbook: Online Since 1996!
