While the actual field for this race is still coming together there are a few interesting choices as long-shots on BetOnline’s futures horse racing odds to win.
What we do know about this year’s Belmont is that Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist is out and Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator is listed as a prohibitive -125 favorite at BetOnline to win this race as well. I have decided to focus my attention for this week’s horse racing betting report on the probable longshots in the field. I have come up with three that have the best chance at pulling off the upset with a victory and a highly profitable return based on their futures odds.
Free Horse Picks: Lani +1600
Horse bettors in the United States knew very little about this three-year old Kentucky-bred colt early in the year since he spent most of his career racing overseas. Trained by Mikio Matsunaga, his victory in the Grade 2 UAE Derby in Dubai was a springboard to a spot in the Kentucky Derby. After placing ninth at Churchill Downs he went on to take fifth in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 21. Other than the favorite Exaggerator, he would be the only other horse in the projected Belmont field to have run all three Triple Crown races.
Looking back at Lani’s overall racing record, he has three career victories and he has finished in the money in four of his last seven events. He comes into this race ranked 48th by Horse Racing Nation and he has the third-highest rating in the field at 8.01.
Free Horse Picks: Malibu +3600
Trained by Christophe Clement, this three-year old New York-bred colt will be making his Triple Crown debut. What makes him such an attractive horse in this race is a solid track record at Belmont Park. As a juvenile he placed third in the non-graded Sleepy Hollow stakes at Belmont over a distance of a mile. He started this season with a victory in the non-graded Gander Stakes at Aqueduct on Feb. 6, but his best career run came in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at this track on May 14 when he finished second behind Unified over a distance of 1 1/8 miles.
Governor Malibu is unranked by HRN and his current rating comes in at 6.82, but he comes into this race with some strong family ties. He is a pedigree of Malibu Moon with a progeny that can be traced all the way back to Seattle Slew.
Free Horse Picks: Wild About Deb +4000
This three-year old Kentucky-bred colt has the longest odds on BetOnline’s futures list, but he is another contender that has some previous experience racing at this track. Trained by Phillip D’Amato, he only raced once as a juvenile with a second-place finish in a Maiden Special Weight race at Del Mar over a distance of 6 ½ furlongs. Remaining on the West Coast into this season, he won a Maiden Special Weight race at Santa Anita Park on April 9 over a distance of 1 1/8 miles to jump-start his run to this race.
After making the move east, Wild About Deb punched his ticket to the Belmont with a third-place run in the Peter Pan. His HRN rating is one of the lowest in the projected field at 6.47, but his familiarity with this track adds some serious value to his long odds and horse betting pick potential.
