Our player to keep an eye on has been quite solid and is one of the eight remaining competitors. Join us while we analyze his chances in ATP Tokyo's quarterfinals.

Gilles Simon (3) vs Gilles Muller
Gilles Simon was our player to keep an eye on and so far has delivered with two straight sets victories over Mikhail Youzhny and Jiri Vesely. The French is trying to reach semifinals in Tokyo for second consecutive year after losing on that stage last season against Milos Raonic.

Simon has been very solid on return this week winning 47.3% of return games. Gilles likes to play against left-handed player because the backhand is his most reliable shot and left-handed players try to explore the backhand side of their right-handed opponents.

Gilles Muller is having his best season ever and reaches Tokyo’s quarterfinals for the second time his career. The serve is clearly Muller’s best weapon and this year he’s averaging impressive numbers with 1.47 aces per service game.

Muller hasn’t been broken so far this week, saving all 11 break points he faced. His last match was extremely tough against Jeremy Chardy however the player from Luxembourg managed to emerge victorious in two tie breaks.

They faced each other recently in Metz where Simon triumphed over Muller 6 – 4 6 – 4. The French had also defeated Muller last season at this Tokyo event in three sets.

Muller will be looking for revenge after two losses but this is clearly a bad match-up for him. Simon has amazing defensive skills that allow him to produce several passing shots and Muller feels many problems with his serve & volley style.

In their most recent match at Metz the key for Simon’s victory was his 2nd serve return where he was able to win 56% of points. Muller placed 60% of first serve in on that match but this week he’s averaging only 55.5%. Muller would need to place at least 65% to have some chances on this contest.

Once again the French should be able to claim the victory against this opponent and we’ll add to our tennis picks the value on Simon’s spread tennis odds.
