Before betting on today's MLS match in NY, note that NYC FC getting three points and the associated bragging rights for the city would be huge this weekend against the Red Bulls.

Odds Overview
In the eyes of the USA Major League Soccer oddsmakers, this match is going to be extremely close, as there's nothing separating the two outfits. Both NYFC and the Red Bulls are quoted at roughly +170 to secure the victory.

If you're thinking a draw is the most likely result, you can find that option at roughly +230 at the top sportsbooks, like 5Dimes or BetOnline.

Here's our MLS pick for today's Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders

New York City FC
It certainly hasn't been the most successful of seasons for NYFC; they currently find themselves in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, having earned just 17 points in total through their first 16 league matches (with a -2 goal differential).

Despite the shaky position in the standings, NYFC has been faring better of late, and maybe that's a sign of things to come for the rest of the season. There's still plenty of time for the club to make a run, and they'll enter Sunday's match having won three of their last four matches overall, with the lone setback coming in the U.S. Open Cup. NYFC has been on a roll in league play recently and now gets a crack at their city rivals.

Coming in, NYFC has gone unbeaten in three straight matches at home, with two draws (against the Chicago Fire and Houston Dynamo) and one win (over the Montreal Impact). We know they're going to be leaning heavily on the production of Spanish star David Villa, who currently leads the team with six goals on the season; no one else on NYFC has scored more than three times.

New York Red Bulls
We haven't exactly witnessed a dominant campaign out of the Red Bulls either. They reside in sixth place in the Eastern Conference and have just three more points to their name than their in-state rivals. New York, however, has only played 15 matches and so they a chance to move up the standings if they take care of business in their matches in hand.

The results have been very up and down lately for the club, as they've recorded two wins, one draw and four losses over their last seven matches overall. Most recently though, they were able to overcome Real Salt Lake in a 1-0 victory at home, with Mike Grella scoring the lone goal to guide the Red Bulls to the three points.

It's been painfully obvious how much this club has missed the now-retired Thierry Henry, and it doesn't appear as if that gap has been filled (and it's unlikely ever to be.) Bradley Wright-Phillips hasn't been nearly as prolific without Henry by his side, but he still leads the team with five league goals. Grella and Lloyd Sam (four goals each) have both contributed going forward too - who will be the difference maker(s) on Sunday?

MLS Pick
When it comes down to it, we're inclined to agree with the notion that this match will come down to the wire, and as a result we believe there's merit in a small wager on the draw, available at a very reasonable +230 on the soccer odds board.

While the Red Bulls have been a little better in the grand scheme of things this season, it's NYFC that's been turning on the style lately, and now they get a chance to extend their unbeaten league run at home.

We're not sold on NYFC winning outright, but we do think a good battle is in store for us here, so we're going to recommend a draw with our MLS soccer picks for the weekend. Look for both teams to go all out in search of at least one point.
