Best Value Picks For UFC Fight Night 104

Dennis Bermudez

Houston welcomes the UFC for a fight night before the big game. It’s not the most star-studded card, but it’s perfect for MMA fans with an itch to bet, who need their fix before the helmets.

The UFC will head to Houston and play second fiddle to the NFL’s biggest game of the year with UFC Fight Night: Bermudez vs. Korean Zombie at the Toyota Center. It’s not the most star-studded card, but it’s perfect for MMA fans who need their fix before the helmets of the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots clash on Sunday evening in the Super Bowl.

Tons of money will fly toward Super Bowl wagering this weekend but you can also find some value in this weekend’s UFC card and make a little cash as well.

Let’s start with the obvious: Alexa Grasso.

She’s a -275 favorite against Felice Herrig but this wide line doesn’t indicate just how much of a favorite that the unbeaten Grasso should be against the middling Herrig. Grasso is a highly touted prospect in the women’s strawweight division that appears to be primed for big things in 2017. She has an impressive ground game, solid striking, exceptional in the clinch and has proven to be pretty durable. Although Herrig is coming off of a win against Kailin Curran in her last fight, her MMA career has proven to be uneven over the course of her eight year career.

Herrig currently hovers at the bottom quarter of the UFC strawweight rankings and isn’t better than Grasso in any department. It should be a rough night for Herrig and the -275 line will cost you a little extra to earn some cash but is well worth it.

Staying with the women’s strawweights, Angela Hill makes her return to the UFC after capturing the Invicta strawweight title during an unbeaten run through the all-women’s MMA promotion in 2016. Her opponent will be Jessica Andrade, who has finished her last two opponents inside of the distance since dropping down to strawweight last June. While it is certainly a tough fight for Hill, the line that currently has her as high as a +415 underdog is inexplicably wide. Obviously, Andrade’s lauded ground game is the reasoning as Hill has a history of struggling with those who can take her to the ground.

It’s certainly worth a shot to take on Hill with those odds. Andrade has been finished by strikes in the past and Hill is a fully capable striker. The likelihood is remote but with odds like that, it’s certainly a case of taking a shot in the dark.

Elsewhere on the card, the hard-hitting Abel Trujillo will face James Vick in a battle of lightweights. Trujillo has been on the hunt for a highlight reel finish and will likely press for one against Vick. For his part, Vick was unbeaten until Beneil Dariush knocked him out last June. With a line of +140 for the fight going under a round and a half, it’s certainly worth a swing at.

Finally, the main event finds the return of Chan Sung Jung, better known as “The Korean Zombie,” after a three and a half year layoff to face Dennis Bermudez. Bermudez finds himself as a nearly 2-1 favorite at most sportsbooks and that’s likely due to Jung’s absence from the sport. Bermudez has won a pair of fights by decision after dropping back to back fights by knockout. If Jung hadn’t been away for so long, I’d advise heavily on taking the over at -205. They don’t call him The Korean Zombie for nothing as he’s proven to absorb a significant amount of damage and keep coming forward. But who knows how that chin will hold up against Bermudez. Jung has been stopped in the past against George Roop via head kick and was knocked out by Jose Aldo, but only after Jung dislocated his shoulder and rendered defenseless.

Ultimately, I’d stay away from this fight given the uncertainty surrounding Jung. But it should be a wonderful fight to watch.
