Leonardo Mayer vs Feliciano Lopez
As we mentioned in our motivation article, there are some players known for playing only at their best on the big stages and Feliciano Lopez is a great example of that. Lopez loves to compete on Masters 1000 events and this Madrid event has an extra reason for Feliciano, since this is the city where he lives. Feliciano’s best career result on this event was achieved in 2014, when he reached the quarterfinals. Lopez will be looking to repeat last year’s presence on this tournament’s second round, where he lost to this same opponent.

Leonardo Mayer returned to competition last week after several weeks away from competition due to a shoulder injury. Mayer played at a decent level, reaching the ATP Estoril Quarterfinals where he lost to Nicolas Almagro. Even though the Argentinean is able to produce a very high level of tennis with his powerful groundstrokes, he’s also known for his difficulties to maintain a consistent level. This will be Mayer’s third career appearance on this event main draw, with his best result recorded last season when he reached the 3rd round.

This will be the third career meeting between these two players, with each of them winning one match so far. The previous encounter took place exactly one year ago on this event, with Mayer emerging victorious by 7 – 6 7 – 6.

Both players enjoy the fast altitude conditions in Madrid and last year, neither of them found a way to break the opponent’s serve. Lopez has been preparing this event for a long time while Mayer only had couple of days to adjust to the difficult game conditions. This match will be played on center court and with the support of his family and friends, Feliciano should revenge last year’s defeat. Having said that, our suggestion is for you to add Lopez to your tennis picks.

Elena Vesnina (q) vs Petra Kvitova (5)
It has been an incredible season for Elena Vesnina, with the Russian reaching several times the latter stages of the competitions as a qualifier. Before this event, Vesnina only lost at Charleston’s final and this week she’s already in the second round, after two wins on qualifying stage and against Jelena Ostapenko on the first round. Elena is known for her aggressive game style, always looking to hit the ball very early and take time from her opponents.

The defending champion, Petra Kvitova, experienced no problems on her debut against the wild card Lara Arruabarrena, dismissing the Spaniard by 6 – 3 6 – 2. The fast game conditions in Madrid suit Petra’s game style, with the Czech saving all the three break point chances she faced. This is Kvitova’s favorite tournament on clay and as we mentioned in our tournament preview, she can never be underestimated on this event.

These two players will face each other for the first time and it should be a very interesting contest. Both will try to control the points with her powerful groundstrokes however, Petra is able to generate more power with her shots. Adding to this, the Czech can also open the court very well with her left-handed serve and forehand. It won’t be easy for Vesnina to hit the ball early as she likes and this seems to be a very good match-up for Kvitova. With this in mind, our advice on this match is to take advantage of Petra’s tennis odds by placing a bet on her.
