ATP Wimbledon Day 2: Free Picks for Tuesday's Matchups

Tsvetana Pironkova vs. Belinda Bencic
Belinda Bencic is still trying to return to her best level after some weeks away from competition due to a lower back injury. Despite missing all the European clay court season, Bencic played already three tournaments on grass, with her best result achieved in s-Hertogenbosch where she reached the semifinals. Belinda loves to play on grass, where her counter punching skills are extremely effective. One of Bencic’s main weapon is the ability to turn cross court into down the line shots, which is a massive weapon on this surface.

After a surprising run in Paris, where Tsvetana Pironkova reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, the Bulgarian is looking to bring the good momentum to her favorite surface. Tsvetana holds a terrific 40 – 27 career record on grass, with one appearance on this event’s semifinals in 2010 and other on the quarterfinals in 2011. Despite Pironkova’s ability to play on grass, the Bulgarian is far from a consistent player who is usually fatal against the best in the world. Tsvetana played one event on grass before this tournament, reaching the quarterfinals in Birmingham.

These two players will face each other for the third time, with Bencic leading on the h2h by 2 – 0.

Their previous encounter took place exactly one year ago, with Bencic emerging victorious on the first round of last year’s edition. A third set was required to solve that match and the same might happen here; however, Belinda’s higher quality should be crucial in the decisive moments and for that reason, our suggestion is for you to add the young Swiss player to your tennis picks.

Alison Riske vs. Roberta Vinci
Grass is clearly Alison Riske’s favorite surface, with the American always performing at a very good level. This year was no exception, after winning an ITF title in Eastbourne Riske was very close from winning the WTA Nottingham, losing only in the final against Karolina Pliskova. The main reason for Alison’s success on grass is her ability to hit the ball early and flat; however, her game style is extremely aggressive which usually leads to a high number of unforced errors.

Looking at Roberta Vinci’s game style, she clearly has weapons to be successful on grass with her tricky backhand slice and terrific net skills as two great weapons on this surface. However, Roberta lost her previous seven matches on grass, with her last victory occurring in 2013. Despite this negative record, Vinci can never be underestimated on grass where she holds a 47 – 33 career record and two appearances in Wimbledon’s 4th round. Before this event, Vinci played one tournament on grass, losing only in three close sets to Ekaterina Makarova in Eastbourne.

This will be the first career meeting between these two players and, despite Vinci’s negative steak on grass, she can create serious problems to her opponent. Playing on a Grand Slam event is always a different thing and while Vinci has a 56.30% winning record on majors with one appearance on the US Open final last year, Riske only won 39.53% of the matches she played in Grand Slams, with her last triumph two years ago in Wimbledon. With this in mind, the value is clearly on Roberta’s tennis odds and with that in mind, we advise you to take the Italian’s set handicap as the best play for this contest.
