Phil “Mr Wonderful” Davis (22-6-0)

Born and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Phil Davis is a recognized name in mixed martial arts. Following a successful stint in the UFC, the now Bellator MMA light heavyweight has remained a top-5 fighter since his debut for the promotion in 2015.

Like his opponent, this weekend, Davis’ martial arts background stems from the wrestling mats. Davis finished college with a 112-17 wrestling record, the four-time NCAA Division I standout was wise to continue his combat sports career.

When it comes to physical attributes, Davis is gifted with the tools capable of finishing any opponent inside the cage. A former Bellator champion, “Mr Wonderful” continues his path towards another title-winning opportunity.

Yoel Romero (13-5-0)

Cuban native Yoel Romero is one of the most accomplished wrestlers in all of mixed martial arts. As an Olympic Games silver medallist in freestyle wrestling, you can already assume where his most recognized talents lay.

Romero was a late bloomer into the world of MMA, beginning his professional career during his early 30s. But now, aged 44, “The Soldier of God” refuses to hang the gloves up, believing his wrestling accolades and vicious knockout power can succeed inside the Bellator cage.

The mean streak of Romero has seemingly slowed down in recent years, a UFC debut was followed by n eight-fight win streak, but since reaching a top-5 level of competition, the losses piled on. However, we must take the elite level of fighters that Romero faced into consideration. A 1-4 losing record from his previous five fights were thanks to former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (twice), Paulo Costa, and current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

Yoel Romero isn’t a regular fighter in his forty’s, don’t let his age dictate a preconceived opinion. Watch his past contests, and you’ll realize why he’s an eight-time UFC bonus winner. Win or lose, Romero will entertain.

Yoel Romero MMA Accomplishments

  • UFC Performance of the Night (Two times)
  • UFC Knockout of the Night (One time)
  • UFC Fight of the Night (Five times)

How Can Davis Win?

When two elite wrestling backgrounds collide, the common occurrence usually leads these matchups into a striking battle, and I believe this approach will suit both men.

Davis can often be found utilizing a striking gameplan anyway; with a 79-inch reach and the ability to deliver power from both orthodox or southpaw strikes, he’ll have no problems standing and banging with the newcomer.

When Davis leads a combination with his left, expect a right high kick, and when he’s leading with his right, expect a power left hook to follow up.

Defeating Romero doesn’t come easy, but if Davis can dictate the pressure and keep Romero guessing with fainted level changes, he can indeed find success in this bout.

How Can Romero Win?

Romero will lose any kind of size advantage, and with a significant layoff from action in addition to an age that isn’t desirable at this level, stepping up to the light heavyweight division could go either way.

Romero’s best hope is to find an early knockout. Previous fights have delivered an undesirable gas tank that won’t fare well across a twenty-five-minute bout and more weight to carry than he’s used to.

Phil Davis vs. Yoel Romero Betting Picks

Don’t get me wrong, Romero is a fearsome opponent for anybody on that Bellator roster. But for our best bets, based on Davis’ age, size, activity, and diverse skillset, I think he has the potential to ruin “The Solider of Gods” Bellator MMA debut.
