Copa Del Ray: Barca vs. Cordoba
How good are Barcelona? Well they have lifted the famous trophy 26 times, including last season's 3-0 cup final triumph over Athletic Bilbao, and they are still unbeaten in La Liga this season picking up their 17th win of the season (out of 18 games) with an categorical 4-0 win over their neighbours Espanyol at Camp Nou, last weekend.
Barcelona also have a little player you may have heard of called Messi, the first footballer to win four FIFA Ballons d'Or, (which (for good measure) he won consecutively) and arguably the greatest living footballer. Barca are 1/33 to win La Liga, 9/4 to win the Champions League, 2/1 to win the Copa del Ray and besides that Messi is 1/19 to be La Liga’s top scorer this term.
I think Barca will win this game; it's a solid choice for my football betting.
Enough with the Barcelona and Messi noise…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
Barca may be undefeated in La Liga this term, but they have tasted defeat in cup competitions, they went down 2-1 against Real Madrid in the Super Cup and lost 1-0 to some team called Celtic in the Champions League. On the other hand Cordoba have beaten such teams as Elche, Sabadell and Real Sociedad in this competition.
The last time they met, in leg one was 12th December 2012 (the year that Lionel Messi scored 91 goals in a calendar year to break Gerd Muller's long-standing haul of strikes in a calendar year). Los Califas were 9/1 to win that game and went down 2-0.
If the difference in pedigree and form don’t tell you who to back in this match, then the odds certainly do. Barcelona winning is at 1/12, a draw is at 8/1 and a shock Cordoba win is at 22/1. What’s more Barcelona winning both halves is at 2/9, while Cordoba winning ANY half (Corodoba/Barca) is available at 25/1.
The shortest odds on the correct score for a Barcelona win are 3-0 at 5/1, while the shortest correct score betting odds on a Cordoba win are on 1-0 at 70/1, that’s behind Barca winning 7-0, with the bookies.
There will be no giant killing in this one.
Do I need to mention that Cordoba need to win 3-1 (or better) to make it through, something that is 250/1 likely. The visitors sit in 12th place in Segunda Division, 21 points behind leaders Elcheand (and 21 Spanish places behind Barcelona). Some sides might consider a 2-0 advantage as a reason to take their feet off the collective pedals, but Barca are a different beast. I think that success begats success and Barca will keep on scoring and will keep on winning. What’s more I feel that the visitors will be intimidated by the occasion and the size of the venue, they are used to playing home games at the Nuevo Arcangel stadium, which has a capacity of just 18,280.
Barca barca and thrice Barca.
