As we mentioned in our quarterfinals top play article, it has been a surprising week at Brisbane, with just the 4th and 6th seeded remaining at semifinals. After seeing Victoria Azarenka confirming her supremacy over Roberta Vinci on quarterfinals, we’ll now focus on the semifinals top tennis selection.

Victoria Azarenka vs. Samantha Crawford (q)
It has been a remarkable week for the qualifier, Samantha Crawford. The 20 years old American has surprised her opponents with powerful groundstrokes and a massive serve. Despite being on her first career WTA Premier main draw, Samantha is showing tremendous composure with remarkable victories over highest ranked opponents. After defeating the Wild Card Priscilla Hon on first round, Crawford won her first match against a top 20 opponent, Belinda Bencic. Samantha dismissed the Suisse in straight sets by 7 – 5 7 – 5, firing 13 aces and saving 6 of 7 break points. It’s quite common on tennis that after a lower level player surprising a top opponent, the probability of a defeat on the next round is quite high, however Crawford was absolutely brilliant, destroying Andrea Petkovic by 6 – 3 6 – 0. The American firepower was too much for Petkovic to handle, ending the match with 22 winners / 22 unforced errors while the German only got 9 winners / 13 unforced errors.

We picked Victoria Azarenka as our top tennis selection for the quarterfinals and the Belarussian confirmed it, with an easy two sets victory against Roberta Vinci. After winning 66.7% of return games on her first two matches, Azarenka did even better against Vinci, breaking the Italian in 7 of 8 opportunities (87.5%). When playing her best game, Victoria is probably the better return on WTA and that’s the main reason why she’s always such a tough opponent for Serena Williams.

This will be the first career meeting between a surprising qualifier and a former world no.1 looking to reclaim a place on top 10.

It should be a very interesting contest, with Crawford trying to overplay her opponent with her powerful groundstrokes; however, she’ll face a terrific counter puncher. Azarenka’s baseline consistency and tremendous intensity might be too much for the young American to handle. Crawford will play with nothing to lose and might give a decent resistance on first games, but as it happened against Vinci, Victoria should cruise into an easy straight sets victory. Once again we suggest to wait for the first two or three games of the match, where there can be an opportunity to get a lower spread line with better tennis odds, but if you want to add already a bet to your tennis picks we advise to add the Azarenka spread.
