Novak Djokovic (1) vs Kei Nishikori (6)

As we picked in our ATP Rome Quarterfinals Analysis, Novak Djokovic booked a place in this semifinals after a straight sets victory over Rafael Nadal. However, it was much tougher than we expected, with the Serbian recovering from a break down in both sets and saving five set points on the 2nd set before emerging victorious by 7 – 5 7 – 6. Winning such a tough match will certainly help Djokovic’s confidence with the French Open around the corner but first, he’s focused in winning his 5th career title in Rome.

It has been a tremendous year so far for Kei Nishikori on Masters 1000 events, with a 14 – 3 record and reaching at least the quarterfinals in all the four tournaments he played. After a slow start this week, with Nisihkori losing the first set he played on this event against Viktor Troicki, the Japanese won the following two matches in straight sets against two extremely talented players – Richard Gasquet and Dominic Thiem. Kei ended the match against Thiem with excellent numbers, firing 18 winners / 14 unforced errors yet, the Japanese requested a medical timeout during the 2nd set.

These two players know each other very well with Djokovic leading on h2h by 9 – 2. This will be their fourth encounter this year, with the Serbian winning all the previous they played this season in straight sets.

Even though Nishikori’s tremendous quality and shot making skills, Djokovic should be too good for him once again. Nishikori is known for his injury proneness and the last thing he wants is to aggravate any physical issue with the French Open around the corner. Having said that, our recommendation for this match is for you to add the Serbian’s spread to your tennis picks.

Garbine Muguruza (3) vs Madison Keys

It has been a tremendous week for Garbine Muguruza so far, not losing a single set on her path into this semifinals. After struggling to find her best tennis in the first months of the year, Muguruza is finally performing at her best level. Garbine is known for her powerful tennis and this week she has been absolutely outstanding on serve, winning 92.0% of her service games and saving 80.0% of the break points she faced.

Madison Keys returned to the semifinals of a WTA event after more than one year from her previous appearance, last year in April in Charleston. The last months haven’t been easy for Madison with several changes on her coaching team. After winning the first three matches on this event in straight sets – against Andrea Petkovic, Petra Kvitova and Timea Babos – the American needed a third set to overcome Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at the quarterfinals. Despite losing a set, it was a remarkable victory for Keys because Strycova is an extremely tricky player and Madison found a way to emerge victorious, ending the match with 34 winners / 48 unforced errors and allowing only 10 winners / 25 unforced errors to the Czech.

This will be the second career meeting between these two players, with Keys winning the previous they played in 2012 Cincinnati by 7 – 6 3 – 6 6 – 1.

Both are known for their powerful tennis and it won’t be easy for any of them to break her opponent. This should be a very close contest and looking at the tennis odds, the value is clearly on Madison’s side. The American has weapons to defeat Muguruza and for that reason, we suggest placing a bet on Keys as the best play on this match.
