Juan Martin Del Potro (WC) vs. Stan Wawrinka (3)
As we already mentioned in a previous analysis, Stan Wawrinka is known for not performing at his best when facing lower level players on Grand Slam events and for that reason, it’s not surprising to see the Swiss experiencing some problems on the first rounds. However, Stan is also known from bringing his a-game when things heat up, with the two-time Grand Slam champion featuring some of his best career performances in the late stages of Grand Slam events.

After thinking about retiring from tennis due to his wrist problems, Juan Martin Del Potro decided to give it another go and after a superb campaign in Rio de Janeiro, the 2009 US Open champion returns to the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows. Even though Del Potro was only one hour one court due to Dominic Thiem’s retirement, the Argentinean is finally experiencing some fatigue after so many matches in recent weeks, with Del Potro also requesting a medical timeout to his right shoulder during the first set.

This will be the 7th career meeting between these two players, with Del Potro leading on the h2h by 4 – 2.

After Del Potro’s recent triumph in Wimbledon, the Argentinean is looking for another triumph over the Swiss; however, things should be quite different this time. Due to his wrist problems, Del Potro uses the backhand slice very often and even though that was an extremely effective shot in Wimbledon, this time, it won’t create as many problems as it did on Grass since the ball bounces much higher on Hard Court. Adding to this, Del Potro might also not present himself at 100% on this contest and for that reason, the value is clearly on Stan’s betting odds.

Kei Nishikori (6) vs. Andy Murray (2)
After a disappointing 3rd round performance against Paolo Lorenzi, Andy Murray returned to his best in the following round against Grigor Dimitrov, dismissing the Bulgarian by 6 – 1 6 – 2 6 – 2. Known for his outstanding return to serve, Murray won 54.32% of the points played on Dimitrov’s service games, with Andy ending the match with 28 winners / 23 unforced errors and allowing only 13 winners to Grigor throughout the entire match.

The 2014 US Open runner-up – Kei Nishikori – returns to the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows after a 6 – 3 6 – 4 7 – 6 victory over Ivo Karlovic. Looking now to Nishikori’s numbers against Karlovic, the highlight clearly goes to his defensive skills, with the Japanese winning 58.93% of the points when Karlovic rushed into the net. After dropping always one set in his previous three matches against Benjamin Becker, Karen Khachanov, and Nicolas Mahut, Nishikori clearly raised the level of his game against an extremely dangerous opponent as Karlovic.

These two players will face each other for the 9th time in their careers, with Murray leading on the h2h by 7 – 1.

Despite Murray’s lead on the h2h, Nishikori is never an easy opponent to face, especially in best of five sets matches. After needing five sets to defeat Nishikori earlier this year at the Davis Cup, another tough contest is expected for Andy here. With this in mind, our recommendation is for you to add Nishikori’s set handicap to your betting picks as the highest value play for this match.
