The Mercedes Cup takes place in Stuttgart and will be played on Grass.

Main contenders
After withdrawing from Roland Garros due to a back injury, Roger Federer returns to competition this week in Stuttgart. It wasn’t surprising to see Roger skipping Paris since his initial idea for 2016 was to skip almost all clay court season. However, after being forced to withdraw from Miami and Indian Wells due to a back injury, Federer decided to play some tournaments on clay – Monte Carlo and Rome – but after his loss in Rome against Dominic Thiem, Roger said he wouldn’t play in Roland Garros if he wasn’t at 100% and that’s exactly what happened. After that decision, Federer’s focus turned to grass, the Suisse’s favorite surface. Roger is a phenomenal player on this surface, with a terrific 142 – 20 winning record and 15 titles won throughout his career. Looking at Federer’s draw in Stuttgart, the Suisse shouldn’t experience any problems on his first two matches against Taylor Fritz and Viktor Troicki. A tougher match is expect on semifinals, where Federer might face Feliciano Lopez. But even though Feliciano’s quality on grass, it was Federer who won all the previous 12 encounters between them. Federer’s tennis odds to win this trophy are at +120 on bet365, which is an extremely valuable price that clearly deserves a bet.

It hasn’t been an easy year for Marin Cilic, who suffered a disappointing loss in Roland Garros’ first round against Marco Trungelliti. After missing Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome due to a knee injury, Cilic returned to competition in Geneva where he reached the final; however, the Croatian couldn’t keep the good level in Paris. Cilic is known for his powerful serve and the fast conditions on grass suit his game style, with Marin reaching Wimbledon’s quarterfinals in 2014 and 2015. Cilic is the highest ranked player on bottom half of the draw but things won’t be easy for the Croatian, who should start his campaign against Denis Istomin. On the quarterfinals, Cilic might face Philipp Kohlschreiber, an extremely dangerous player who won six of their previous nine meetings, including this year’s contest in Rotterdam. If Marin survives this difficult match, he can face very dangerous players in the semifinals such as Grigor Dimitrov, Juan Martin Del Potro or Gilles Simon. Simon seems to be the one with higher chances of reaching the semifinals and the French’s terrific counter punching skills seem to be too much for Cilic, with Gilles winning 5 of their previous 6 matches. Looking at Cilic’s draw this week, is very hard to find value on his price at +750 on bet365 to grab the trophy.

Player to keep an eye on
Philipp Kohlschreiber loves to play on his home country with 5 of his 7 career titles achieved in German soil, including one earlier this year in Munich. When looking at Kohlschreiber’s career numbers, grass is the one where he performs at a higher level with a 63.01% winning record while his overall winning record is 56.80%. Despite starting his campaign in Stuttgart against two competitive players on this surface – Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Denis Kudla – Kohlschreiber is at a higher level and shouldn’t experience many problems to book a place on the quarterfinals. Philipp might face Marin Cilic at that stage of the competition and as we mentioned before, the edge is on Kohlschreiber’s side. If Philipp reaches the semifinals, he might face Gilles Simon and even though Gilles 4 – 3 lead on h2h, it was Kohlschreiber who won the last two matches between them. With this in mind, we believe that Kohlschreiber has very good chances of reaching the final this week and for that reason, our suggestion is for you to add the German’s outright at +1200 on bet365 to your tennis picks and trade it before a possible clash in the final against Federer.
