Rafael Nadal (1) vs. Pablo Cuevas
It has been an unusual week for Pablo Cuevas, with the Uruguayan facing a left-handed player for the fourth time in four matches on this competition. Despite not losing a single set so far on this event, Cuevas has been far from impressive and was close from dropping a set on his quarterfinals contest against Federico Delbonis, but the Argentinean couldn’t seal the deal after serving for the second set. Pablo’s one-handed backhand is his weakest shot, with the Uruguayan struggling to maintain a consistent depth with that groundstroke.

We mentioned in our ATP Rio de Janeiro quarterfinals preview, that Rafael Nadal would have a very tough match against Alexandr Dolgopolov, but the Ukrainian withdrew from the competition due to a shoulder injury. Nadal is always a fearful competitor on clay and this is a great opportunity for him to return to an ATP final. After his second round victory over Nicolas Almagro, Rafael said he was very pleased about his victory over his fellow countryman, especially with the level he presented on the first set.

This will be the third career meeting between them, with Nadal winning the two previous contests they played, both in 2015 on clay.

This should be a classic match-up, with Nadal’s heavy spin crossed forehand exploring his opponent’s one-handed backhand. As we referred, Cuevas has been far from reliable with his backhand and Nadal knows perfectly how to explore that. The Spaniard should be just too strong for his opponent, with his baseline consistency and crossed forehand as his main weapons. Having said that, we advise to add to your tennis picks the value on Nadal’s tennis odds spread.
