Dominic Thiem vs Adrian Mannarino
After an outstanding run on clay tournaments in July with back-to-back titles, Dominic Thiem hasn’t been able to keep the good results. Since those good tournaments, the Austrian only won 6 of the following 14 matches, with clear problems to perform at a consistent level.
Thiem is an extremely talented player and can produce very high level of tennis, but is far from a solid competitor. Last week he played in Basel and showed that inconsistency in his match against Robin Haase, winning by 0 – 6 7 – 6 7 – 5. This will be Dominic’s second appearance on this event after reaching 2nd round last season.
Adrian Mannarino had a tremendous start of season but hasn’t also been able to keep that level in recent months. Adrian is a great counter puncher, hitting the ball very early with a remarkable shot placement. The biggest problem for Mannarino is his defensive mindset, playing very defensive tennis and giving many opportunities for his opponents to control the rallies.
Mannarino’s left-handed slice serve is quite effective on these game conditions; however, his second serve is very slow and vulnerable. Adrian’s best result on this event was also 2nd round in 2011 and 2014.
They played earlier this year in Miami with Thiem emerging victorious in a tremendous battle by 7 – 6 4 – 6 7 – 5.
Dominic can make much more damage with his groundstrokes however is always hard for him to face such a consistent player as Mannarino. The French doesn’t give many free points to his opponents and will force Thiem to play longer rallies, exploring his inconsistency. The Austrian is the favorite for this contest but Mannarino knows how to explore Thiem’s inconsistency and this match should go to distance.
