Our player to keep an eye on, John Isner, started his campaign with a tough win over his fellow countryman, Sam Querrey. On the following round, the American no.1 will face the eight seed, Roberto Bautista Agut.

Roberto Bautista (8) Agut vs. John Isner (3)
As we mentioned in our tournament preview, John Isner was a player to keep an eye on this event and he’s a serious contender to the title. It was far from an easy first match for Isner, however the world no. 11 managed to overcome Sam Querrey by 7 – 6 6 – 7 6 – 4. John ended the match with outstanding numbers on serve: 75% first serve in, 31 aces and not dropping his serve a single time. Isner doesn’t always show the best body language on court, but this week he seems to be extremely focused, on a tournament where he has a 16 – 2 career record.

After defeating the defending champion on his debut, Jiri Vesely, Roberto Bautista Agut kept the good level to overcome the American Donald Young. Roberto is one of the toughest competitors on tour, with an incredible consistency and baseline intensity. Despite not being a big server, Bautista Agut can protect very well his service games, winning this week 95.5% of service games.

This will be the third career meeting between this pair, with Isner leading the head-to-head by 2 – 0, both victories on hard court.

The last contest between these two players was at this same Auckland event in 2014, where Isner emerged victorious by 3 – 6 7 – 6 6 – 4. It won’t be an easy match for the American, he always needed a third set to defeat the Spaniard, but once again he should get the win against this opponent. As we mentioned, Isner showed a tremendous mindset on his first match and when he’s serving at such great level is almost impossible to break him. Agut will try to extend the rallies, forcing John to move from one side to another; however, it will be very hard for Roberto to get any chance on return if Isner keeps placing over 70% first serve. Having said that, we’ll add John Isner tennis odds to our tennis picks as our ATP Auckland quarterfinals top tennis pick.
