Andy Ruiz Jr. Beats Anthony Joshua In A Massive Upset

Ruiz scored a seventh round TKO of Joshua to win the WBA, IBF & WBO Heavyweight titles and become the first Heavyweight World Champion of Mexican descent. It was an upset reminiscent of Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson in 1990.

Joshua was supposed to defend the titles against Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller, who tested positive for performance-enhancing supplements and was denied a license by the NYSAC.

Anthony Joshua was -3000 favorite at most sportsbooks while Andy Ruiz Jr. was a +1200 underdog. The former champion came into the fight with a 22-0 record (21 KOs) while Ruiz was 32-1, also with 21 knockouts.

As far as a potential rematch, the WBO mandatory is due at the end of September and rematch clauses do not trump mandatories. The current WBO No. 1 ranked Heavyweight is Dillian Whyte.

Did The Simpsons predict this surprising result? Ruiz was completely written off by many because of his physique and a comparison can be made to a scene from The Simpsons in which Homer (as a huge underdog) battles reigning heavyweight champion of the world Drederick Tatum.

Homer didn’t beat Tatum, as Moe parachuted him out of the stadium but there are other similarities that make the comparison rather amusing, for example, when their fight ends, Tatum shows respect to Homer and smiles, just like Joshua did after Ruiz beat him.
