American Century Championship Predictions & Betting Picks

American Century Championship

13/14 July, 3 pm EST

Several of America’s athletes and celebrities assemble for the 2019 American Century Championship at the beautiful Lake Tahoe as backdrop to the Edgewood Golf Club. The event uses a modified Stableford scoring system and last year set an attendance record for the fourth straight year of 57,097 fans.

Celebrities like Ray Romano and Charles Barkley will supply the laughs while guys like Mark Mulder, Ray Allan and Stephen Curry offer a more competitive edge to proceedings as they via for the $125,000 winner’s cheque.

The two guys this revolves around are NFL legendary quarterback Tony Romo and Braves pitcher John Smoltz who is a baseball legend also. Both protagonists are now revered commentators who have a highly respectable golf ability.

The bookmakers have been kind enough to price up two fields for us to analyse.

Tony Romo or John Smoltz v The Field, Props Bet

Betting Odds:

  • Tony Romo or John Smoltz to win the ACC (+160)
  • Field to win the ACC (-195)

Firstly it is difficult to equate the bet of Tony Romo/John Smoltz versus the field. They will have their work cut out against three-time winner Mark Mulder in particular. We also know NBAs Stephen Curry is a competitive beast, who in the 2018 Ellie Mae Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour broke par for the opening round. That one piece of form is significantly better than anything we have seen on the PGA Tour from Tony Romo who has been propping up the field. His last outing at the Byron Nelson Classic was an abject display in easy scoring conditions. We do have to remember though that Tony Romo won last year’s Championship and may be better suited to competitive golf in lesser company. This is a tough ask but for a small stake interest I like taking the two esteemed commentators with John Smoltz match sharpness from the Champions Tour the major factor.

Recommended Props Bet:

  • Tony Romo or John Smoltz to win the ACC (+160)

Tony Romo v John Smoltz, Match Bet

Betting odds:

  • Tony Romo (-135)
  • John Smoltz (+105)

This looks the most interesting of the two markets and having followed both sporting legends closely in recent months I have a definitive opinion on both players.

We talked about Tony Romo earlier discussing his poor form at his last PGA Tour outing. That was not the first time he has dipped his toe in the water with golfing elite however, each time he disappoints. It could be he is nervous in the knowledge he is not good enough and gets a little overawed but with his competitive genes you would expect him to rise to the occasion. As I covered above I do expect Tony Romo to play better in these conditions but it may not be good enough in the match bet.

John Smoltz is a different commodity altogether in my opinion acquitting himself well on his Champions Tour starts this season. In March he came 53rd at the Cologuard Classic beating household names Rocco Mediate, Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin in the process. These guys are regular competitors at the business end of competition on the Champions Tour. If that was not enough proof of the latent natural ability the ex pitcher holds he went on to perform respectably at the Mitsubishi Classic and the American Family Insurance Championship managing to reach the turn in one round four under.

I expect John Smoltz to be sharp from his Champions Tour experience giving a solid wager as underdog in this match bet.

Recommend Match Bet:

  • John Smoltz to beat Tony Romo (+105)
